What does your “brand” say about you? Your brand isn’t just your logo, your colors, or your tagline. Your brand is your reputation.
When I was producing commercials for a large national corporation, the company was dealing with a PR nightmare. It was my first time working with them and I was trying not to fidget in their conference room -- I was so uncomfortable sitting with their marketing department as we looked over scripts. They sighed heavily and pursed their lips as they told our production team about the company's anxiety over a story gaining steam in the press that wasn't even completely true.
They were a recognizable national brand and created popular products that were part of people’s everyday lives. This experience made me realize you can’t control your brand 100%. Like it or not, your brand is what OTHER PEOPLE think of you – whether the story is true or not.
I worked with their team NOT to fix the problem with a new logo or a new slogan. We fixed the problem with new STORIES. Instead of trying to correct every comment or control every headline, we interviewed their long-time fans and loyal customers. In our videos, we told real stories about real people who loved their products and had positive experiences with their brand. Slowly, the media circus died down, the conversation changed and the brand was back on top -- and the folks in the marketing department were no longer balls of stress, but rather creative and fun to work with!
That’s why the stories you tell about your company and your customers are so important. Stories can reinforce you have a business people can trust, and sometimes, staying silent can weaken that trust.
🔥 Strategic videos are extremely powerful. Not by hyping your company, but by clearly communicating your values, expertise, and credibility. If you stay silent or have outdated content, that also speaks volumes about your brand – probably not the story you want to tell.
