🎙️ On today's episode of REAL estate TALK: That little ® symbol actually carries a lot of weight.
Yesterday, Melissa mentioned 'breaking down complex real estate terminology', and it really got us thinking 💭. Agents bring words into conversation like addendum, contingency, and title search; but, what do they all mean?
We’re putting the ‘Real’ in Real Estate by sharing some common real estate terms with you guys, and we're starting today! Our goal is to arm you with the information, steps, and tools you need to make informed homebuying decisions because !
Let's start with the most important word, REALTOR®. So, what is a REALTOR®? Great question — because it’s not just another word for real estate agent. A REALTOR® is a licensed real estate professional (Agent or Broker) who is also a member of the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR). That membership matters because REALTORS® agree to follow a strict Code of Ethics that goes beyond what the law requires.
What makes a REALTOR® different? A REALTOR®:
☑ Is licensed to practice real estate
☑ Is a member of NAR (and usually a state & local association)
☑ Follows a Code of Ethics focused on honesty, transparency, and protecting clients
☑ Is accountable to professional standards—not just state law
☑ Commits to ongoing education and best practices
What does the Code of Ethics mean for clients? It requires REALTORS® to:
☑ Put their client’s best interests first
☑ Be truthful in advertising and representations
☑ Treat all parties fairly
☑ Disclose material facts
☑ Avoid misrepresentation and conflicts of interest
Here's a quick comparison ⬇️
Real Estate Agent: Licensed by the state
REALTOR®: Licensed + member of NAR + bound by a higher ethical standard
