New Bankruptcy Scam Targeting Debtors: The scam involves a party calling a debtor using a spoofed number that appears to be from the bankruptcy court. The debtor is told they owe money to the court and can pay by Zelle.

The Bankruptcy Court will never contact a debtor by phone requesting payment. All payment notices will be sent by official mail, either from the Bankruptcy Noticing Center or the Court directly. Payments by Zelle are not allowed.

Labor Day Weekend—Play It Safe on the Road

According to a recent WSMV investigation, a former U.S. attorney from Kentucky has become the eighth driver arrested for DUI by the same Tennessee State Trooper—despite being completely sober. That’s right: innocent people arrested.

It’s stories like these that remind me: even one mistake—or worse, one mistaken judgement—can spiral quickly. And brings back a case from early in my career… the very first DUI I defended was for someone who had never touched drugs or alcohol in their life and they were close to retirement age. Being sober didn't save them from the system—but it did teach me just how easily such mistakes can destroy reputations.

If you find yourself in the situation this lady was in, be sure to ask for a blood test. Alabama has several ways to charge those under the influence of controlled substances (.08 or higher BAC, under the influence of alcohol, controlled substance, alcohol and controlled substance, under the influence of ANY substance which renders the person unfit).

This Labor Day weekend—whether you're heading to the lake or firing up the grill—please don’t take chances. Impaired… or sober and misread, unsafe choices like driving distracted, after stress, fatigue, or minor crashes can trigger unnecessary legal consequences. Know your limits. Plan ahead. Designate a driver. Use rideshares. Look out for one another.

🚨WARNING: Roofing Scam Alert in North Alabama! 🚨

Hey North Alabama friends, given the recent storms, I wanted to let you know to watch out for a sneaky scam making the rounds! Some shady roofing companies are pushing homeowners to sign “Assignment of Benefits” (AOB) forms after storms or damage. Here’s how it works: They offer to “handle” your insurance claim, inflate the repair costs, and then pocket the payout—leaving you with shoddy work or nothing at all. Sometimes they even team up with lawyers to sue your insurer for more cash, and YOU could end up on the hook!

Red Flags to Watch For:
- Unsolicited visits from roofers promising “free inspections” or big insurance payouts.
- Pressure to sign paperwork giving them control of your insurance claim.
- Estimates that seem way too high before you even call your insurance.
- Checks going to the roofer or a lawyer instead of you.

Protect Yourself:
- Don’t sign anything without reading it—especially AOB forms!
- Call your insurance company directly to report damage.
- Get multiple quotes from trusted and licensed, local roofers.
- If it feels off, report it to the Alabama Department of Insurance (1-800-433-3966).
