Estate planning is not just about having documents. It’s about making sure the right documents exist, the right people know they exist, and someone can actually find them when you’re dead, incapacitated, or otherwise unavailable to help from beyond the grave.

Disclaimer: This is not legal advice. It is mostly common sense. Please only rely on the advice of a professional.

Athens is getting a Lagree studio, and it officially opens next week.

If you’ve never done Lagree: it looks a little like Pilates, but it is decidedly not Pilates and it’s not boring (sorry Pilates fans). You work on a Megaformer using slow, controlled movements, constant resistance, and very little rest. The goal is strength, endurance, core stability, and having your muscles shaking and hating you only 7 minutes into class.

I went to a free community class today before the official opening, and I am VERY excited to have this in Athens.

This is not a sponsored post. Nobody paid me to say this. I just genuinely think Athens needed this and wanted people to know it’s coming.

There is, however, one serious problem with the location.

The studio is next to Paris Baguette.

Which is just terrible.

Absolutely terrible planning to put a Lagree studio next to a building containing croissants.

See you next week, Athens. 🥐

Let’s talk about common insurance mistakes that turn “I planned ahead” into “please call a lawyer.”

Stupid things people do against legal advice: a series brought to you by “I know you said not to, but…”

The law can protect you from many things. It cannot protect you from your own commitment to making a terrible decision. This series is dedicated to people who have heard a lawyer say “please do not do that” and they do it anyways.

Most people think cryonics is a science story. It’s actually a trust law story.

Cryonics is trending among the high-net worth as an alternative to cremation or burial, but on the off-chance that the frozen decedent is revived, no one wants to be
poor. (Immortality is really only appealing if you are wealthy, go figure.) Because of changes to state trust law and the gutting of the rule against perpetuities (a centuries-old doctrine that forced wealth to eventually leave a trust and re-enter the world), trusts can now be used to shelter money forever,
accumulating and compounding, with a dead frozen beneficiary waiting for it. $1 million placed in a trust today can easily be worth more than $2 billion in a century.

Trusts for the cryonically frozen are raising legal questions that almost no one thinking about: Who is the beneficiary of a trust whose settlor intends to return? What happens to compounding capital over 200 years with no distribution
requirement and no living person forcing accountability? What does inheritance mean when the estate is designed never to be inherited?

Obligatory lawyer disclaimer: This post is for educational purposes and for parents who are about to drop their children at college and suddenly realize that “but I’m her mother” is not, in fact, a legally recognized form of authorization.

This is general information, not legal advice, and definitely not your legal advice. Laws vary by state, facts matter, and TikTok/Instagram should never be confused with a law firm. And my employer bears absolutely no responsibility for the things I say on the internet. These views are mine alone.

Consider this a parenting tip from a lawyer, not legal advice from your lawyer. Proceed accordingly, and maybe get those documents signed before you unload the dorm-room mini fridge.
