Putman Law Office recently obtained an important victory for a client in a class action case before the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. In 2020 a federal district court found my client and a co-defendant liable for violating state wage and hour laws and awarded the plaintiff class more than $1.5 million in damages and attorney fees. Last Thursday the Eighth Circuit unanimously reversed the district court's decision. The attached article from law360.com provides a concise summary of the case, which will serve as an important precedent for future cases of this type.

A drug and alcohol recovery program and a for-profit organization weren't employers of a group of people participating in a treatment initiative, the Eighth Circuit ruled, saying the participants were the program's primary beneficiaries and are not entitled to wages.

I was hoping this oral argument before the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals would be live and in person, but due to COVID we are once again appearing virtually. After two years of video arguments and hearings, we’re starting to get the hang of it.

This is what I did on Friday November 19. After eight hours of classroom training and an online final exam I received my certification in Adult Mental Health First Aid. This process was much more arduous than any of us affiliated with Arkansas JLAP envisioned when we first discussed this idea back in 2019, but it was well worth the time and effort. Shout out to the JLAP staff who facilitated and taught the course and to my fellow JLAP volunteers who spent their Friday learning how to help friends and colleagues when mental health issues arise.

I recently learned that one of my recent cases ranked as a Top 20 (15th to be precise) class action settlement of 2020. I've been fortunate to work on a number of nationally significant cases in my career. But no matter how large or small your case may be, I strive to provide the same high quality representation and service to all my clients.

This morning I served as moderator for a presentation I recorded three weeks ago for the 2021 Missouri Lawyers' Assistance Program Virtual Conference. Lawyers experience well-being issues like depression, anxiety, and substance abuse at rates far greater than the general population. Awareness and education are the keys to successfully addressing these issues in the profession. I've served on the Arkansas Jlap committee since 2017 and I'm very proud of the work this organization does to serve the legal community.
