A moment I had to share…

If you know Demetria L. Lucas, then you know she has built an incredible career with her words and her voice. She is a bestselling author, award-winning journalist, cultural critic, and media personality whose work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Essence, VIBE, Black Enterprise, The Guardian, and The Grio, among other major publications.

Many people also know Demetria from television. She starred on Bravo’s “Blood, Sweat & Heels”, which followed a group of successful women navigating their careers, businesses, friendships, and lives in New York City.

Today, she continues those smart, candid conversations as the voice behind the Ratchet & Respectable podcast.

And here’s what makes this particularly special for me:

I’m a listener.

I listen to Demetria’s podcast because I enjoy her perspective, her humor, her intelligence, and the “straight no chaser”way she talks about our culture. She usually doesn’t have guests on her pod, her audience tunes in for her. So when she reached out and invited me onto her platform to talk about my area of expertise, it was definitely a full-circle moment.

We sat down to talk about what I’ve spent nearly three decades helping families understand: LEGACY… wills, trusts, estate planning, protecting what you’ve built.

Because legacy isn’t just about what you leave. It’s about how you leave it.

I hope you’ll listen to my conversation with Demetria—and then SHARE IT.

Thank you Demi for having me, and for helping get the message out about the importance of this work.

Do I need a trust?

Fact: trusts are not just for the ultra-wealthy. If you own a home, have children, or have anything you would want to pass down without a courtroom in the middle of it, a trust may be exactly what you need.

Think of a trust like a filing cabinet. While you are alive, you hold the only key. You can open it, move things around, add to it, or take things out whenever you want. When you pass, the person you named simply picks up that key and hands out what is inside, following your instructions, quietly and privately. No judge. No public probate file. No family waiting months for answers.

Compare that to a will standing on its own. A will still has to march through probate court, where it becomes public record and can tie up your loved ones for months before they see a dime.

A few things a trust can do that surprise people:
✅ Keep your affairs private (probate is public, your trust is not)
✅ Plan for incapacity, not just death
✅ Spare your family the cost, delay, and stress of court
✅ Give you real control over how and when your loved ones receive what you leave

This is general education, friends, not legal advice for your specific situation. Every family is different, and the right plan depends on your goals.

If you have been meaning to finally get this handled, let’s make it easy. My practice is fully virtual, so you can protect your family right from your couch. Grab a time with me here and I’ll answer your questions one on one

Planning for Your Kids

👶 If you have children, this is the post I most want you to read.

Here is what surprises parents: without a plan, the court decides who raises your children and who manages the money you leave them. A stranger in a robe, not you.

A trust lets you set the rules. You decide when your kids receive what you leave, and for what. College. A first home. Not a lump sum handed to an 18 year old the day they turn 18. You can also name the guardian you trust, in writing, instead of leaving it to a judge to guess.

This is the difference between hoping your kids are cared for and knowing it.

Let’s build that plan together. Fully virtual:

Powers of Attorney

🖊️ Estate planning is not only about what happens when you pass. It is also about what happens if you are still here but cannot speak for yourself.

That is what a power of attorney is for. Think of it like a permission slip. It names the person you trust to step in and handle your finances or your medical decisions if you are unable to. Without one, your family may have to go to court to be granted that authority, during an already frightening time.

A trust plans for your assets. A power of attorney plans for you. You want both.

Wills vs. Trusts

📄 vs. 🏛️ “Do I need a will or a trust?” Yes. And here is the difference.

A will is like a dustpan. It is the safety net that sweeps up anything you forgot to put in your trust and sends it where you want it to go. Useful, but here is the catch: a will alone still has to go through probate court, which is public and can take months.

A trust is the filing cabinet. It holds your assets privately, avoids the courtroom, and hands everything off according to your instructions without a judge involved.

Most families I work with end up with both, working together. The trust does the heavy lifting, and the will backs it up.

Curious which combination fits your family? Let’s talk. Fully virtual, right from your couch: https://www.attorneydornataylor.net/book
