Today, we celebrate German American Day, a day recognizing the history, heritage, and contributions of Americans of German descent.

German immigration to what is now the United States began in the 1600s, with significant waves continuing throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Like many immigrants before and after them, German immigrants came in search of religious freedom, economic opportunity, political stability, and a better future for their families. So many came that German is the most commonly reported ancestry in the United States with approximately 45 million Americans reporting having German ancestry in the 2020 Census.

That history is especially meaningful here in Michigan where Detroit became an important center of German immigration during the 19th century. By the turn of the 20th, more than 30,000 German immigrants lived in Detroit, representing nearly one-third of the city’s foreign-born population.

German American Day is more than a celebration of heritage, it's a reminder that immigration is deeply connected to the history of the United States. Today is International Translation Day. Observed each year on September 30, International Translation Day recognizes the important work of translators, interpreters, and other language professionals who help people communicate across languages and cultures.

In immigration law, we have the privilege of working with clients from different countries and backgrounds however, not everyone we serve speaks or understands English fluently. Our team along with outside translators and interpreters helps communicate with clients, understand important documents, prepare applications, and navigate a legal system that can be difficult enough to understand even in your native language.

But the people doing this work aren't always professionals. Immigrants themselves, along with their family members, friends, and community members, often become translators and interpreters for those around them. They help a parent understand a government letter, accompany a relative to an appointment, translate a document, or explain an important conversation. Their role can be invaluable and often goes unrecognized.

Language should never be a barrier to understanding the immigration process. Accurate translation and interpretation help ensure that people's stories, documents, questions, and concerns are understood as clearly as possible.

Today, we recognize everyone who helps bridge the language gap from professional translators and interpreters to the countless people who step in every day to help someone else be heard and understood. Happy International Translation Day!

Twenty-five years ago today, our nation experienced an unimaginable tragedy.

On September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives. Families were changed forever. First responders and volunteers made extraordinary sacrifices. Communities across the country and around the world, felt the weight of a day that would forever alter the course of American history.

But the impact of September 11 extended far beyond that terrible day. It fundamentally changed the American immigration system.

In the years that followed, immigration became increasingly connected to national security. New laws and policies expanded immigration enforcement, detention, information sharing, security screening, and government scrutiny of immigrants and visitors. The creation of the Department of Homeland Security and the restructuring of federal immigration agencies transformed the way our immigration system operated.

These changes affected millions of people who had never been accused of terrorism or any other crime. Immigrant communities experienced increased scrutiny, longer separations from family, expanded enforcement, and a growing sense that immigration status could have profound consequences for their lives.

At the same time, September 11 reminded us of something fundamental: behind every immigration case is a human being, a parent, spouse, child, worker, student, neighbor, or friend with a story and a life that matters.

Twenty-five years on, we remember those who were lost, honor the first responders and volunteers who sacrificed so much, and reflect on the lasting changes that followed.

September 11 remains not only a defining moment in American history, but a reminder of the difficult balance between protecting our nation’s security and upholding the principles of fairness, due process, and human dignity that define who we aspire to be.

They helped build our cities, work our farms, staff our hospitals, open businesses, create jobs, and strengthen neighborhoods across the country. Their contributions are woven into the story of American workers and the continued growth of our nation.

Labor Day is more than a celebration of a day off. It is an opportunity to recognize every worker whose effort helps move America forward, regardless of where they were born or how they came to call this country home. 🗽 From ICE detention to freedom and safety: A massive victory for our client!

In March 2026, our client’s life was turned upside down. Despite having a pending asylum application, valid work authorization, and doing absolutely nothing wrong, he was suddenly detained by ICE.

We immediately went to work. Fighting an immigration case from inside a detention center is incredibly difficult, but we refused to back down, AND WE WON. 🏛️⚖️

Just two weeks after his asylum was granted, we secured his release from custody, despite DHS’s threats to appeal. Today, he is officially an asylee, his removal proceedings are completely closed, and he can finally start building his life in the United States without fear. 🕊️

The immigration system can be an uphill battle, but we never back down from a fight. Recently, we represented a client who spent a grueling six months in ICE detention. When the immigration court outright refused jurisdiction over a bond hearing, we took aggressive legal action and filed a federal habeas petition just to force the court to do its job and schedule the hearing.

As America celebrates its 250th birthday, we reflect not only on the ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence but also on the people who have helped turn those ideals into reality.

The story of the United States has always been intertwined with the story of immigration. Several of our nation's Founding Fathers were immigrants and many more were the children of immigrants. Figures such as Alexander Hamilton, who was born in the Caribbean and James Wilson, who immigrated from Scotland, played pivotal roles in shaping the Constitution and the institutions that continue to guide our nation today.

For 250 years, people from every corner of the world have come to America seeking freedom, opportunity, and the chance to build a better future. They have served in our armed forces, built businesses, advanced science and medicine, enriched our culture, and strengthened our communities. Generation after generation, often in the face of extraordinary challenges, immigrants have helped write the American story.

The promise of this nation has never been defined by where someone began their journey but by the shared belief that liberty, hard work, and opportunity can build a stronger future for everyone.

As we celebrate this historic milestone during a time of both opportunity and challenge, we honor all those who have contributed to our nation's success.
