A Time to Pray

Whether you worry, paint a picture, or prepare a PowerPoint presentation, there comes a time to stop (and pray).

I am there.

I have the privilege of presenting “Divorce and its Tax Issues” to the 2023 Family Law Seminar of the North Dakota Bar Association this Thursday, the 9th of September.

Wish me luck and, please, pray for the Attorneys.

Technical Tax Teaser --

Record and keep records to support both sources of your account deposits

It is important you document and support the source of all your bank and account deposits. Unidentified account deposits, especially cash from an undocumented source, will be treated by the Internal Revenue Service upon examination as unreported income and you will owe additional income tax, interest in possibly penalties.

Be it transfers in from other accounts, gifts from friends and families, or loan proceeds, if the source of these nontaxable deposits are not noted and supported the Internal Revenue Service could successfully tax you on these deposits if you fail to support their otherwise nontaxable status.

Forensic Accounting is the specialty practice area of accounting that describes engagements that result from actual or anticipated disputes or litigation. “Forensic” means suitable for use in Court, and it is to that standard and potential outcome that forensic accountants generally have to work.

A Forensic Accountant is often retained to analyze, interpret, summarize and present complex financial and business related issues in a manner which is both understandable and properly supported.
Forensic Accountants can be engaged in public practice or employed by insurance companies, banks, police forces, government agencies and other organizations.
A Forensic Accountant is often involved in the following:
• Investigating and analyzing financial evidence;
• Developing computerized applications to assist in the analysis and presentation of financial evidence;
• Communicating their findings in the form of reports, exhibits and collections of documents; and
• Assisting in legal proceedings, including testifying in court as an expert witness and preparing visual aids to support trial evidence.
In order to properly perform these services a Forensic Accountant must be familiar with legal concepts and procedures. In addition, a Forensic Accountant must be able to identify substance over form when dealing with an issue.
