A Government Accountability Office report found that a growing number of employees at major companies, including , Walmart, FedEx, and gig economy platforms such as Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, Grubhub, and Instacart, rely on and despite being employed, highlighting ongoing affordability challenges. In the states studied, the number of Amazon workers receiving food assistance and Medicaid has nearly tripled since 2020, while nationwide nearly 14 million working adults were enrolled in Medicaid and 10.6 million lived in households receiving SNAP in 2024.
