Most home’s main sewer lines are most likely to be about as old as the home itself. Sewer lines need about as much care, attention, maintenance, and inspection as the other major active systems within the home. Without inspection, there is no clear way of knowing the condition of this below ground waste line. Negligence of sewer lines can lead to sewage backup into your home, causing the home to be unlivable with no use of toilets or showers until repaired. Tank One’s certified technicians provide a sewer sweep by inserting a small video camera into the sewer line which can check for common problems such as blockages, holes, pooling, cracks, tree root intrusion, and pipe separation. The average cost of a sewer line replacement can exceed $7,500+ and identifying these problems before purchasing a home puts the cost burden for the repair on the seller instead of the buyer.

Corrosion is caused by the inherent tendency of iron based metals that most all heating oil underground storage tanks are comprised of, to revert to a stable form. This stable form is what you know as rust. When and how fast steel turns to rust is dependent on a wide variety of variables such as soil moisture, pH acidity, backfill material, physical location of the tank, the thickness of the tank, amount of water in the tank, age of the tank and any scratching or damage occurring during the tank's installation.

About 62% of equipment failure is caused by algae, sludge build-up, and oil tank corrosion. When a tank starts corroding, hydrocarbon ingredients become more and more oxidized. This leads to the accumulation of bacteria and fungi which reduces the quality of the fuel stored in the tank. This can increase the risk of an oil leak and can lead to contamination.

If you or someone you know is looking to buy a home, it’s important to consider the safety of the property and the environment. It can be risky if your property contains an abandoned or corroded oil tank that you are unaware of, especially if you are uncertain as to whether or not the soil is contaminated due to an oil leak. Here at Tank One, our team of experts will perform a subsurface investigation of the area surrounding the tank, extract soil samples, and send them off to a state certified laboratory for a complete analysis. Test results can be available within 1-4 days.

Rust never sleeps and eventually all steel tanks will corrode and leak, maybe next week, maybe 20 years from now The cost of remediation is significantly larger than simply removing the old tank.
