Rising Life Expectancy Means More Years at Risk

Americans are living longer — and that is directly increasing the likelihood that you or your loved ones will need long-term care.

According to the the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's official data, life expectancy at birth rose to 78.4 years in 2023, and a person who reaches age 65 can now expect to live nearly 20 additional years. You can review the data directly in the National Center for Health Statistics Data Brief on U.S. Life Expectancy.

Those additional years are not all healthy years. The longer you live, the greater the probability of developing chronic illness, cognitive decline, or physical limitations that require assistance with daily activities.

That is the key driver behind the growing demand for long-term care.

The Probability You Will Need Long-Term Care Is High

The most authoritative projections come from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Alzheimer’s disease remains one of the most devastating conditions affecting older adults and their families. Researchers are now investigating an unexpected possibility: carefully timed flickering light and sound stimulation that may help slow the biological processes behind the disease.

A recent report describes how scientists are studying whether specific patterns of sensory stimulation can influence brain activity linked to Alzheimer’s. The research is summarized in the CNN article Can Flickering Lights and Sound Slow Alzheimer’s?, which highlights early clinical work exploring this unusual approach.

The idea may sound unconventional, but it is grounded in well-established neuroscience.

The Role Of Gamma Brain Waves In Memory

Your brain constantly produces electrical rhythms known as brain waves. One pattern — called gamma oscillations — is associated with memory, perception, and learning.

Q1. I am giving serious thought to my estate planning and to who I want to leave most of my assets to when I am no longer around. I am seriously considering leaving the bulk to my two children and not my spouse. I live in Virginia. Would this be possible or is my wife guaranteed a certain amount?

Q2. One more thing... and this involves my sister. She lives in Maryland. She rekindled an old romance from years ago at her class reunion. She is hoping to get engaged on Christmas eve, as she and her boyfriend already picked out a ring. Not only will this hopefully mean a happily ever after for her and her boyfriend, but it also means a big, blended family for her three children and his two sons. What do you suggest when it comes to estate planning for her soon-to-be blended family? Similar to myself, she mentioned also wanting to leave most of her assets to her children. Thanks for your help.

Anyone who knew Hal five years ago, when he was 66, would describe him as sharp, clever, and quick-witted. He had a knack for trivia and always answered more questions on Jeopardy than anyone else in the room. He always handled the bills, and made wise decisions when it came to investments and running his business. When it came to estate and incapacity planning, he and his wife, Sarah completed their documents when they turned 50, and they joined our Lifetime Protection Program every year since to ensure they are always up to date.

Lately, Hal, who has been stressed for a variety of reasons for quite some time, has become noticeably forgetful. Last time his daughter visited his home, she was alarmed to find unpaid electric and water bills piled up in his desk drawer. Had she gotten there a week later, he and Sarah would be sitting in the dark with no running water.

Anyone who knew Hal five years ago, when he was 66, would describe him as sharp, clever, and quick-witted. He had a knack for trivia and always answered more qu

Every year we release the key dollar amounts that are frequently used in elder law, including Medicaid figures, long-term care insurance deductibility limits, Medicare premiums, Social Security Disability, and Supplemental Security Income. Since most of these figures have been released, we are happy to provide details on what has changed for the coming year. Be sure to check back here often, as we will add any information that has not yet been released and update the page should any changes occur (e.g. the Minimum Monthly Income Allowance adjustment is updated annually on July 1).

Medicaid Figures:

Medicaid is the primary funding source for long-term care for millions of disabled and elderly middle class Americans, providing vital long-term care coverage to those who qualify for the benefit.

Although the federal government establishes general guidelines for the program, states design, implement, and administer their own Medicaid programs.

Most people know they need an estate plan, but few know where to start. Without a clear plan in place, your assets, retirement accounts, and home could be subject to probate, unnecessary taxes, and court intervention.

This estate planning checklist walks you through every key step, from setting up a Power of Attorney, Advance Medical Directive, and Long-term Care Directive to choosing the right type of living trust and naming beneficiaries and decision makers.
Estate Planning Checklist
Step 1. Sign a Power of Attorney
A Durable General Power of Attorney (POA) is the most important legal document that every person needs as part of a good estate plan and incapacity plan. A power of attorney document authorizes a trusted person (called your agent or attorney-in-fact) to manage your legal and financial affairs if you become incapacitated.

Most people know they need an estate plan, but few know where to start. Without a clear plan in place, your assets, retirement accounts, and home could be subje

Probate Tips for Getting Through the Process Faster and with Less Hassle
Probate lawyers are well aware of the hassles and headaches that families face when a loved one’s estate goes into probate. Not only might a family have struggled to make ends meet due to the inability to afford long-term care insurance, but the process can drag out, eating up not just time but also resources that would have otherwise gone to beneficiaries. Appointed executors find themselves with burdensome responsibilities that can compound their grief. In order to navigate the process as quickly and smoothly as possible, probate lawyers recommend you keep the following in mind:
Probate Tip #1: Hire an Experienced Probate Attorney
It may be tempting to navigate probate alone, but a good probate lawyer will be able to make the entire process more efficient. The attorney’s expertise will guide you steadily in the right direction and keep you on track for closing probate as quickly as possible.
