The purpose of SEAC is to give parents and other School Board appointees a voice in how school divisions provide services to students with disabilities. SEAC members provide reports and recommendations directly to the School Board.

Did You Know?

The IEP’s Services chart states the dates during which the student will receive the IEP’s services. Many parents worry that the school will stop the IEP’s special education services if they do not consent to the school’s proposed IEP by the current IEP’s “expiration” date. That will not happen in Virginia. An IEP does not expire upon the end date for the services (or upon the annual review, if that date is different).

In Virginia, the school cannot change (or end) the student’s IEP services without first obtaining the parent’s informed consent. Until the parent consents to changing, or ending, the IEP’s services, the school must continue to implement the services identified in the last consented-to IEP. Those services commonly are called the “stay-put services.”

Schools sometimes create a sense of urgency for the parent to sign the newly-proposed IEP. Please do not succumb to that pressure. Virginia’s IDEA regulations do not set any deadline for a parent to provide informed consent to the school’s proposed IEP. Take sufficient time after the IEP meeting to review the IEP and to understand its contents. If you do not understand something or have questions, ask the school. If you still have questions or concerns, you may want to contact a special education advocate or attorney.
