Preparing for a custody evaluation in Virginia can feel overwhelming, but the right approach can make a meaningful difference.

Custody evaluations deal with mental health testing, generally for the parents and children, that is key for the evaluator to recommend what is best for the children.

Evaluators are often looking at more than just what’s said in meetings. They assess behavior over time, communication patterns, each parent’s ability to support the child’s needs, and overall stability.

Common missteps like inconsistent communication, lack of preparation, or reacting emotionally under stress can work against you without you realizing it.

Preparation isn’t about presenting a perfect image. It’s about being consistent, thoughtful, and aware of how your actions may be interpreted throughout the process.

In many cases, mental health professionals also play a role, adding another layer to how evaluations are conducted and understood.

If you’re facing a custody evaluation, our latest blog breaks down what to expect and how to prepare. Read the full article at https://reese.law/prepare-for-custody-evaluation-with-virginia-child-custody-lawyer.html

As graduation season approaches, many divorced or separated parents start asking the same question: who pays for college?

In Virginia, college expenses are not included in child support once a child reaches adulthood. However, there may be agreements in place, or opportunities to plan ahead, that address how college costs will be handled.

These conversations often involve more than just tuition. Room and board, books, and other expenses can quickly add up, making early planning especially important.

If expectations aren’t clearly defined, disagreements can arise at a time that should be focused on your child’s next chapter. Expectations extend not just to the parents, but also the child to make sure they know what is expected of them in terms of performance.

At ReeseLaw, we help clients navigate these financial decisions with a forward-thinking approach, so everyone is better prepared for what’s ahead.

If you’re approaching this stage, now is the time to start the conversation. Schedule a consultation to plan ahead.

Can you move out of state with your child after divorce? It’s not always as simple as packing up and going.

In Virginia, relocating with a child – especially out of state – often requires either the other parent’s agreement or court approval. Judges will look closely at whether the move supports the child’s best interests, including stability, relationships with both parents, and the overall impact of the relocation.

Even well-intentioned moves, like a new job or family support, can become complicated if proper steps aren’t followed.

The earlier you address a potential relocation, the more options you typically have.

At ReeseLaw, we help clients approach these situations strategically so they can plan ahead and avoid unnecessary setbacks.

If you’re considering a move or responding to one, contact ReeseLaw before taking the next step.

How you communicate with your co-parent matters more than you might think.

In custody cases, courts don’t just look at outcomes. They often look at patterns of behavior. Communication can reflect your ability to cooperate, make decisions, and support a stable environment for your child.

Tone matters. Consistency matters. Documentation matters.

Respectful, focused communication can strengthen your position. On the other hand, repeated conflict, hostility, or lack of responsiveness may raise concerns.

Even everyday exchanges like texts, emails, or co-parenting app messages can become part of the bigger picture.

At ReeseLaw, we help clients approach communication with intention, so it supports their case rather than complicates it.

If you’re navigating co-parenting and want to be more strategic in how you communicate, we’re here to help. Call our office or visit our website to schedule a consultation.

What happens when one spouse wants a divorce and the other one doesn’t?

It’s more common than you might think.

In Virginia, one spouse cannot ultimately prevent a divorce from moving forward. But when there’s a lack of agreement early on, the process can feel more complex and emotionally charged.

The path forward often depends on how each side engages. In some cases, mediation or structured negotiation can still be effective. In others, a more formal legal approach may be necessary to keep things moving.

Be sure to have a strategy that accounts for both the legal process and the dynamics at play, especially when cooperation is limited.

If you’re feeling stuck or unsure how to move forward, our latest blog breaks down what to expect and how to take the next step. Visit our website to learn more.

Postnuptial agreements aren’t just for worst-case scenarios. They can be a proactive tool for structure and protection.

So when should you consider one?

In many cases, postnuptial agreements make sense after a significant change, such as starting or growing a business, receiving an inheritance, experiencing financial strain, or simply wanting to define financial expectations moving forward.

They can also be useful when couples want to address concerns transparently and avoid misunderstandings down the line, creating a clear, open framework around important decisions.

At ReeseLaw, we help clients approach these conversations strategically and put agreements in place that reflect their long-term goals.

If you’re wondering whether a postnuptial agreement makes sense for your situation, we’re here to help you evaluate your options. Contact ReeseLaw to put the right protections in place.

Do judges read text messages in family law cases?

In many situations, text messages, emails, and other digital communications can become important evidence. This is not just limited to written communications. Audio and video recordings apply too.

Courts often look at communication between parties to better understand behavior, decision-making, and overall dynamics. These messages can provide context that goes beyond what’s said in court.

Clear, respectful communication can support your position. On the other hand, impulsive or hostile messages may raise concerns.

It’s a simple but important reminder: what you put in writing can carry more weight than you think. You should assume that anything you put in writing will one day be read by a judge, so remember your audience.

If you have questions about how your communication may affect your case, we’re here to help. Contact us to learn more.

Mediation can be a highly effective way to resolve family law matters, but it doesn’t work in every situation.

When one party is unwilling to compromise, there’s a lack of transparency, or communication has completely broken down, mediation may reach a standstill.

That doesn’t mean you’re out of options.

In some cases, the next step may involve more structured negotiation, attorney-led settlement discussions, or, when necessary, litigation to move the process forward and protect your interests.

The key is recognizing when it’s time to shift strategies, and having a plan in place when you do.

At ReeseLaw, we guide clients through these transitions with a strategic approach, so they can move forward with direction and peace of mind.

If mediation hasn’t worked in your case, we can help you evaluate what comes next. Contact ReeseLaw to build a strategy that moves your case forward.
