School is almost out, summer plans are taking shape, and for families with college-bound students, August will be here faster than it feels right now. ๐ฎโ๐จ
Between orientation, travel, dorm shopping, and tuition deadlines, itโs easy to miss one of the most important college-prep steps: making sure your student has the right legal documents in place. ๐
Once your child turns 18, parents no longer have automatic legal authority to access medical information, help with financial matters, or make urgent decisions on their childโs behalf โ even if you're paying tuition or health insurance. ๐
Weโve seen how overwhelming this can become when a student has a medical emergency away from home, and parents are unable to obtain information because the necessary documents were not signed in advance. ๐
Thatโs why college-age students benefit from having key documents in place before they leave for school, including a power of attorney, medical directive, and healthcare proxy.
And if youโve created these documents in the past, it may be time to revisit them. Decisions can change, and older documents may be viewed as outdated by hospitals, banks, schools, or other institutions.
For a limited time, The Geller Law Group is offering a "College Student Discount" for families in DC, Virginia, and Maryland who want to take care of this now, before the late-summer rush. ๐ฉโ๐๐งโ๐
