Cybercrime and scam cases in the AI era are becoming increasingly sophisticated.

On November 10, I will be one of two main speakers at the American Korean Businessmen Friendship Forum’s 2026 Fall Forum in Tysons, Virginia, discussing scam cases.

The forum will focus on cybersecurity and cybercrime in the AI era, including practical guidance to help businesses and individuals recognize threats, reduce risk, and respond with confidence.

I have represented many scam victims and have seen firsthand how convincing these schemes can be.

Sophisticated scams don’t only fool inexperienced people. They are designed to earn trust before they take your money.

One thing I wish more people understood about cryptocurrency investment scams is that the victims are not necessarily inexperienced investors.

Many of the people I meet are financially sophisticated.

They understand stocks, investments, retirement accounts, and financial markets.

And they still get scammed.

The schemes I am seeing can involve months of relationship building, seemingly legitimate investment education, detailed market discussions, and online communities filled with people who appear to be successfully participating.

Some also incorporate claims about advanced AI-driven investment technology.

By the time the victim realizes the platform, the profits, and even the community may all have been fabricated, an enormous amount of money can already be gone.

These scams are sophisticated, and they are designed to build trust over time.

For many tax matters, the attorney handling your case does not necessarily need to be in your state.

My office is in Virginia, and I regularly work with clients from all around the country.

While I was in New Orleans recently, I met with a prospective client who happened to live just a couple of miles from my hotel.

We had originally planned to meet over Zoom, but since I was already in town, we took the opportunity to meet in person instead.

What made the connection even more interesting is that his brother in Texas had originally found my firm online.

It was a good example of how many tax matters can cross state lines, even when the client and attorney are based in completely different parts of the country.

A lot of taxpayers come to me after they have already researched their issue and figured out which form, response or request they think needs to be submitted to the IRS.

What they are often more concerned about is what happens next.

What if the IRS asks for more information?

What if the person reviewing the case disagrees with your position?

What if you submit everything and the matter still does not move?

That is an important part of what I do as a tax attorney.

I communicate with the IRS, respond to questions, provide additional documentation and legal explanations when needed, and pursue the appropriate next steps if the issue is not resolved.

Knowing what to file matters. Knowing what to do after you file can matter just as much.

Important IRS update: Revised IRS collection guidance effective June 29, 2026, expressly permits observational field visits in certain financial investigations.

Revenue Officers may drive by and observe the condition of a taxpayer’s real property or, in appropriate cases, vehicles and other assets visible from a public location. Those observations may be considered together with financial statements and supporting documents when evaluating asset values and a taxpayer’s ability to pay.

As a tax attorney, my concern is not simply what a Revenue Officer may see. It is what conclusions may be drawn from a brief observation without the full story.

A well-maintained home does not necessarily mean available cash. A newer vehicle may be leased, financed, jointly owned, or necessary for work. Appearances can be misleading.

But when what is visible appears inconsistent with the financial information submitted, taxpayers should expect questions and be prepared to explain the circumstances with credible documentation.

In IRS collection cases, accuracy alone is not always enough. The financial information should also be complete, consistent, and supported by the taxpayer’s actual circumstances.

When I think about Chuseok, our Korean Thanksgiving, I think of the food, the family gatherings, and the traditions I grew up with in Korea.

Living and working in the U.S., I experience some Korean traditions a little differently now than I did growing up. Chuseok gives me a strong connection to my roots and to the people and traditions that shaped me.

One of the things that struck me most during my recent trip to Korea was how easily the very old and the ultra-modern exist side by side.

We took the KTX bullet train to Busan and spent some time hunting for vintage shops, including stores filled with old-Americana clothing.

There were traditional clay bowls, modern skyscrapers rising over the city, luxurious hotel lounges and the ocean in the background.

You could move from something that felt rooted in another era to something completely modern in a very short amount of time.

That contrast is one of the things I love about Korea.

I recently played in the WDCGA Tony Marlowe Tournament and was proud to finish 3rd place with my partner, Cynthia.

The Women’s District of Columbia Golf Association dates back to 1924. I think it is pretty incredible that, more than 100 years ago, women golfers in the D.C. area organized their own association and created opportunities to compete.

It was fun to be part of that tradition this year.

And winning a place was a bonus. ⛳
