Part 2 of “What do I do if the school is not academically challenging my child?” 📝

The school says your child can’t participate in advanced academic programs such as IB or AP courses because they have a disability that would make the course “too difficult”.

That is actually discrimination‼️ If your child has the prerequisites to take an advanced course, the school is not allowed to prevent the child from doing so!

The first day of school is around the corner. 📚Here are the 5 things every Virginia special education family should have ready.⬇️

1. Your child’s current IEP.📝 Read it all the way through and flag: goals that still fit, service hours in minutes, accommodations that match current needs.

2. A one-page snapshot of your child.📄 New teachers meet the paperwork before they meet your child. Include strengths, interests, what works, and what to watch out for. Send it with your back-to-school letter.

3. A written communication log.📑 A notebook or spreadsheet works! Page one: contact info for your child’s case manager, teachers, and related service providers. Keep track of every call, email, and meeting.

4. Your procedural safeguards notice.📜 The school should send you this at least once a year. It explains your rights under IDEA. Email them if you haven’t received it.

5. A back-to-school letter.💌 Send a brief, friendly email to your child’s special education team introducing yourself and your child (attach the one-page snapshot). Ask when the first check-in will be.
