🎉 10 Years, $10,000 Thanks 🎉
Amanda L. Sinclair, Senior Associate Attorney for Petrusha Law, has nominated Canine Companions for Independence to receive this month’s $1,000 donation, as part of our “10 Years, $10,000 Thanks” campaign. Each month, a different team member chooses a nonprofit that holds personal meaning for them.

It's time for another episode of Estate Planning with the S*T*A*R*S*!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Joe Robbie (July 7, 1916 – January 7, 1990)

Joe Robbie amassed a fortune during his lifetime and became a celebrity as owner of the Miami Dolphins. The team was fabulously successful, even completing the only undefeated season in NFL history in 1972-73.
Still, when he died in 1990, fighting among his children (he had 11) ensued. And then there was the matter of tax bill of $45 million from the IRS. The only way to satisfy the IRS was to sell the team. With that went a major piece of Robbie’s legacy. His name was even stripped off the stadium he helped build. Better estate planning could have headed off all the trouble.

The Lesson:
With a Net Worth of $100 Million at his death, a proper estate plan would have ensured that his legacy would have lasted, at least a little longer, and would quell any possible disputes within his family by designating who would get what and when. Just goes to show that even a law degree doesn't make you immune to losing your legacy.
