Panel submissions for PIELC 2023 are now open! Please use this form if you have ideas for speakers or topics: https://forms.gle/WpVVh7bDDQbet8G18

The theme of this year’s Public Interest Environmental Law Conference is “Reconnecting and Transitioning Together.” After having virtual conferences for the past three years, we recognize what a privilege it is to once again connect with each other in person. The world must connect new people, ideas, and resources as we shift the dial on so many facets of environmental law and sustainability. Through this theme, we hope to emphasize connection to one another and transition to a more sustainable world.

The organizers of PIELC are committed to hosting an inclusive event that celebrates diversity, opposes injustice of all forms, and acknowledges the connection between oppression and environmental destruction, more than ever before. We are seeking each panel to be diverse and inclusive.

Hi everyone!

Good news! The annual Land Air Water rafting trip is back on this year! We have about 80 camping spots reserved at Almeda Campground near Merlin, Oregon from September 2-4. Due to the past years’ fires, there are not as many rafting spots available, but we have managed to reserve 50 spots to raft. (If you have your own kayak or raft, you’re more than welcome to bring it and go down the Rogue River with everyone else!) As with past years, the conference co-directors for the upcoming Public Interest Environmental Law Conference (in person for the first time since 2019!!) will be announcing this year’s theme. A link to sign-up for the trip is below. If you have any questions, feel free to message us; we will respond as quickly as possible.

As a quick guide, preference will be given first to 1Ls, then alumni, then any 2Ls/3Ls that have helped out with the conference in past years, then everyone else. If you are rafting, the price will be $40; if you’re just camping, only $20; we also plan on providing a keg which will be an additional $5 if you’re interested in drinking.

We ask anyone interested to fill out the below form by the end of day Thursday (8/25). We will continue taking the form through next Thursday (9/1) and will inform those who have a spot reserved ASAP.

Hope to see you all soon,
LAW Co-Directors
Michelle & Claire

We are thrilled to share the 39th PIELC Kickoff Event featuring U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley!

We are thrilled to announce the 39th PIELC Kickoff Event featuring U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley!

Senator Merkley has long been a champion of both environmental and social issues. Senator Merkley’s passion for change has stayed with him through his long political career, beginning in 1998 when Senator Merkley entered the Oregon House of Representatives. As Oregon’s House Speaker, Senator Merkley led one of the most productive legislative sessions in decades passing landmark environmental and energy legislation. While serving in the U.S. Senate, Senator Merkley has continued to fight to protect the environment from corporate interests while serving on the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works.

Join us on September 25th at 12 PM PST to hear Senator Merkley speak on various environmental and energy victories and issues both here in Oregon, and nationally. We will be live streaming the event via the PIELC YouTube. Senator Merkley will be giving a brief address followed by a Q&A, where you can enter questions via the chat. We cannot wait to see you all there!

After days of deliberation, the Conference Co-Directors have made the truly heartbreaking decision to cancel the 38th annual Public Interest Environmental Law Conference, which was scheduled to take place March 5-8, 2020. We do not take this decision lightly. The rapidly developing situation with COVID-19 in the Pacific Northwest demanded a cautious response to protect the public welfare.

This was obviously a very tough decision, as we were looking forward to hosting everyone in Eugene. We apologize for the inconvenience this will cause in your travel plans. If you are a panelist or travel stipend recipient, we will reach out to you individually shortly. If you registered for CLE credits, we are looking into video recording options to fulfill your CLE requirements or refunds. We will also pursue options to preserve some of the other scheduled content via video recording and provide this online at a later date. Additionally, we are available for questions at [email protected].

The Indigenous People’s Reception and Alumni Reception hosted by the Environmental and Natural Resources Center, both large events with food service, have been canceled independently.

Thank you all for your continued dedication, support, and tremendous effort in putting together PIELC 2020. We could not do it without each and every one of you. We look forward to seeing the whole PIELC community in 2021.
