Have you ever seen a wild black bear? Rocky Mountain National Park and the surrounding wilderness and communities has a small but active population of black bears. These cuties are waking up from hibernation and heading out in search of food- what does that mean for us?

Well, it means that we need to be Bear Aware. Black bears will eat almost anything, and will happily break into vehicles, houses, and trash cans in search of a tasty treat. Once a bear has found food which is easily accessible, it will overcome its wariness of people and visit the site often. Be sure to clean up all food from picnic and camp sites and to stow food and other scented items in a closed, locked vehicle, or a food storage locker or food cannister if you are camping. Also take care to not overfill the bear-resistant trash cans both in the national park, and the nearby towns of Estes Park and Grand Lake!

While it's uncommon to encounter a black bear on the trails, it can happen. The National Park Service recommends that should you encounter one in Rocky that you back away slowly, but do not run. Stay calm and pick up small children. Make lots of noise by shouting and clapping your hands. I don't think it is too common for our black bears to attack humans, but if you are attacked, fight back!

Our friends over at Nick Molle Productions / Rocky Mountain Channel have a great little video on bears from a few years ago- I'll post a link in the comments for you!

Following recent storms, roads on both the east and west sides of Rocky Mountain National Park are icy. Expect patches of snow on the roads in places. All motorists should be prepared for winter driving conditions. Please slow down and keep your distance from other vehicles while driving.

Vehicle Traction Law is in effect throughout Rocky Mountain National Park. This means that all vehicles (including 4-Wheel Drive, All-Wheel Drive, and 2-Wheel Drive) must have properly rated tires (Mud and Snow, Mountain and Snow or All-Weather Tires) with a minimum of 3/16" tread.

If your vehicle does not have properly rated tires, you must use an approved traction control device. These may include snow chains, cables, tire/snow socks, or studded tires.

Beaver Meadows, Fall River and Kawuneeche Visitors Centers are open.
