In this final post of our most recent blog series, we examine the time for change beyond adjusting a care plan.

Falls happen. Nursing homes know this, which is why residents are assessed for fall risk and care plans are created to help keep them safe. But when a fall results in a serious injury or when falls happen repeatedly, families should take a closer look at what may have contributed to the incident and whether or not the time has come for a larger change.

Not every injury in a nursing home is “just part of aging.”

Falls often tell a bigger story - missed supervision, delayed response times, or preventable hazards.

If your loved one has fallen, it’s okay to ask questions. It’s necessary. If you need additional help, contact us.

Most families assume that if something is wrong in a nursing home, someone will catch it.

But many of the warning signs of neglect aren't discovered during an inspection, they're noticed by the people who know the resident best.

In our latest blog, JP explores the reality of nursing home oversight and why families are often the first line of defense.

It's a bittersweet day at Sawyer Law as we bid farewell to one of our own. While we love the military families we meet with Fort Rucker as our neighbor, saying goodbye is never easy!

Dakota Smyer has been an asset to our firm and a blessing to so many clients. She and her family will be relocating to Texas as part of her husband's service to our country. We wish them all the best and hope their journey will bring them back to Enterprise soon!

Thank you, Dakota!

In our community, we look out for each other. That doesn’t stop when a loved one enters a nursing home. Advocacy doesn’t end at the front door - it just changes form. And sometimes, it means speaking up when something feels off.

"Something just isn't right."

Families say this to me all the time when they suspect nursing home abuse or see signs of neglect. Sometimes it starts with a subtle change - a loved one who suddenly seems fearful, withdrawn, or confused. Other times, it’s physical: bruising, rapid weight loss, worsening bedsores, or injuries that don’t quite make sense. In whatever form it presents, what begins as a nagging feeling often becomes too great to ignore.

On the blog this week, learn more about recognizing the quiet signs of nursing home abuse and neglect and how to make changes in the best interest of your loved one..

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate the women who raised us, protected us, and continue to shape our lives in ways big and small.

For many families, that love comes full circle - becoming the ones who now advocate, protect, and speak up for their mothers when they need it most. Because honoring your mother isn’t just about today. It’s about making sure she’s protected every day.

Happy Mother’s Day 💐

Why do I do what I do? Well, situations like this are my "why."

If you’re looking at this photo of zip ties and confused about how they relate to elder care, you are not alone.

I recently received a shocking image of an elderly nursing home resident zip tied to furniture as a form of restraint. It was more than disturbing - it was a reminder of what can happen when vulnerable residents are treated as problems instead of people. A physical restraint of this nature is not just inappropriate, it is dangerous, degrading, and in many cases, unlawful.

This is why I am passionate about my work. Behind every case is a person who deserves dignity, safety, and respect - and a family who trusted they would receive it. If something seems off with the care your loved one is receiving, trust that instinct. Ask questions, document what you see, and don’t wait to get help. We are here to help you find a path forward.

May is National Elder Law Month...a time to focus on protecting some of the most vulnerable members of our community.

For many families, that means asking important questions:
Is my loved one safe?
Are they being treated with dignity?
Would I know if something was wrong?

At JP Sawyer’s office, this month is a reminder of why the work matters. While “elder law” can mean many things, his focus is clear: helping families when nursing home neglect or abuse leads to serious, preventable harm.
