LORI BASCOMB: Attractive Black Female 30’s Lead Elegant, refined, and emotionally layered. A dance instructor and former prodigy haunted by infertility and her mother’s su***de. Outwardly composed and meticulous, but beneath the surface is fear, guilt, and an obsessive need for control. Must have a strong emotional range. Already Cast
ALANNA: Black Female 30’s Lead Very Attractive Charismatic, intense, alluring, and unpredictable. A former dancer turned surrogate, hiding deep resentment and mental instability beneath her warmth. Motivated by revenge against Lori and her family. Must have the ability to feel both dangerous and tragic.
THOMAS BASCOMB: Black Male 30-40’s Handsome Supporting Lead, A university ethics professor who prides himself on intellect and composure, but underneath is weak, duplicitous, and emotionally detached. Torn between loyalty, guilt, and selfish desire.
ERIN: Black Female 30’s Supporting Lori’s cousin and best friend. Warm, outspoken, and fiercely loyal. The moral center of the story who is grounded & helps Lori realize the deception early on. Loyalty, courage, heart, protection.
DR. KORN: Male 40s-60’s Any Ethnicity Supporting Day Player Psychiatrist overseeing Lori’s treatment. Calm, clinical, and authoritative, but emotionally distant. Represents the institutional voice of control and skepticism.
DR. DANIELS: Male 40s-60’s Supporting Any Ethnicity Day Player Compassionate obstetrician who manages the surrogacy and acts as a voice of reason amid chaos calm presence grounding medical scenes.
RITA: Black Female 20’s Supporting Day Player A gifted young dancer at Lori’s studio. Naïve, eager to please, and full of potential. Represents the next generation of ambition and pressure in the dance world. Must dance convincingly — technical skill or strong movement background essential. Needs to convey innocence and admiration shading into discomfort.
CARA TAYLOR: Female 20’s Any Ethnicity Supporting a Day Player Thomas’s graduate student and one-time lover. Bright, anxious, and emotionally fragile. Her “su***de” becomes a critical plot point. Small but emotionally heavy role — must create empathy and tragic tension.
MICHELLE: Female 20’s Black Supporting a Day Player The original surrogate candidate — bubbly, unguarded, and ultimately victimized by Alana’s deception. Must be able to have range of Light energy early, then grounded fear when she returns to reveal the truth.
MISS HAMILTON: Black Female 50’s-60’s Supporting a Day Player Lori’s late mother, a strict and celebrated dance teacher. Seen through flashbacks, mirrors, and memories. A woman of elegance and severity whose legacy still dominates Lori’s psyche. Requires strong physicality and commanding presence. Even brief scenes must carry emotional weight and authority.
ETHAN: Black Male 30-40’s Day Player – Alanna’s volatile boyfriend. Jealous, possessive, and emotionally abusive. His death early in the story marks Alanna’s first act of violence.
PAISLEY: Black Female 8s-10’s Supporting a Day Player Erin’s daughter. Bright, sweet, and uninhibited — appears in the opening and closing dance sequences. Symbol of hope and continuity. Child actor must be expressive and comfortable with simple choreography.
