Just a reminder how delicate probation can be.

BREAKING: After a winter that tested patience, pavement, and basic trust, Punxsutawney Phil has officially been released from custody. No ceremony. No stump. Just an open cell door, an orange jumpsuit folded away, and a court issued ankle monitor blinking softly as he steps back into daylight.

Sources say prison changed him. He walks slower now. Listens more. Studies the sky like it might hold grudges. Officials insist this isn’t freedom, it’s house arrest, with strict conditions. Any unauthorized blizzard, false spring, or surprise April snow squall will be considered a violation. Monitoring will be constant. Weather will be watched.

The country is cautiously optimistic. Phil hasn’t promised warmth. He hasn’t promised sunshine. But after months behind bars, the hope is simple: whatever forecast comes next, it better mean it.

There have been several reported candy "theft" cases today. This is typical for the day after Halloween. We've had several questions from kids about the legality of the so-called Halloween "Dad Tax". We even observed one kid standing outside his home with a protest sign that said "taxation is theft!"😳

Based on extensive legal research, we believe it's legally enforceable by all Dad's. Dads may collect anything up to 25% "tax" associated with halloween. Additionally, due to the landmark federal court case United States VS. Little Timmy; Dad's may have "first dibs" on all fun sized Snickers bars.

Sorry kids. We can not prosecute for theft in these situations. You may file an appeal with the court of Mom, but we can not guarantee any success. Our suggestion,,,,,,, hide those snickers bars!!

I represent a fair amount of Law Enforcement Officers from time to time, and lately it has been largely related to substance abuse related allegations. It is undoubtedly a profession that not only is plagued with the disease of alcoholism but one that is met by others in law enforcement with the highest degree of hypocrisy.

Recently, while representing an officer who received an alcohol related charge, the State's Attorney's Office in Montgomery County refused this law enforcement officer of 27 years, with an impeccable record and proven strides against the disease of alcoholism, an accommodation that they routinely offer to those here illegally. Please understand that this is not a comment about immigration, this is a statement that elected officials have chosen to prosecute those with certain immigration statuses with mercy and persecute with impunity, those that protect us every day. I could not even get the gatekeeper in the office to talk with me on the phone. Instead, she hid behind canned email responses.

Putting aside that actions like these drive those with addiction further into the shadows rather than to seek help, I can only take solace in the fact that my client refuses to forfeit his sobriety because of the State's ignorance. Their "policy" to treat people differently based on their citizenship status is confounding and illegal. Their cheers for the police one day and refusal to treat them as any other human the next is despicable.

It is a sad day when you strapped on a duty belt for 27 years to protect those in the community, but because you ARE a US citizen and you needed help, you received greater punishment for accepting the consequences of your actions and someone else gets the benefit of the doubt simply for showing up undocumented.

Again, this is not an immigration post and I understand the adversity faced by those individuals, but this is a fairness post and we have to do better. Especially for those we lean on everyday.
