Tonight, Tchaikovsky’s Fifth — the symphony in which Fate enters as a whisper and departs as a blaze. A sonnet, in the manner of the Bard, to mark the hearing.
On Hearing Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony
A clarinet, in shadow, breathes a vow —
“Submit,” it sighs, “for Fate is iron-shod.”
The strings concur; the soul, unwilling, bows;
The forest darkens at the foot of God.
Then horns, like lovers parted by the years,
Pour forth a song so tender it accuses
The very heavens — answered now by tears,
Now by the storm that mocks what love refuses.
A waltz steps lightly past the wound, and yet
The fated motive whispers in the wing;
Grace cannot make the soul of man forget
The summons of an unrelenting King.
Till, in E major, sorrow stands transfigured —
What seemed a doom was Providence configured.

We run all our days in pursuit of wealth — but have we paused to ask what wealth is truly founded upon?
Peel back the layers, and beneath the coin we find labor; beneath labor, the person; beneath the person, destiny; and beneath destiny, the quiet Way itself.

Sonnet — Whence Fortune Springs

　　Behind the coin that glitters in our hand
　　There lies the labor forged with steady care;
　　For wealth attends the craftsman’s patient stand,
　　And gold will seek the hands that truly dare.
　　Yet every deed is grounded in the soul —
　　The inner man who gives each task its frame;
　　Perfect the person, deeds attain their goal,
　　And worthy works arise to bear his name.
　　Behind the man there stands his destined way,
　　The measure of a life aligned and clear;
　　Attune thy being to the greater day,
　　And fate shall bloom like springtime drawing near.
　　　Yet destiny itself is born above —
　　　A helping heart is heaven’s truest love.

Lord of Hosts, Prince of Peace —

Still the thunder of iron wings.
Dry the tears of Persian mothers and American widows alike.
Let Shalom fall as rain upon deserts of hatred.
Gather every tribe, tongue, and faith to one table of bread.
Make us peacemakers — and call us Your children.
