✨FAQ Friday 🪪: "What ID do I need for my notary appointment?" California accepts: a current (or issued within 5 yrs) driver's license/state ID, U.S. passport, military ID & certain other government IDs.

Expired beyond 5 years? No ID? Call me BEFORE your appointment — there are options (like credible witnesses), and I'll walk you through them.

Not sure if your ID will work for your notary appointment? Don’t wait until I arrive to find out. 🪪✍🏽

Identification requirements can vary depending on the type of ID and the circumstances. If your ID is expired, you don’t have acceptable identification, or you’re coordinating a signing for an elderly or hospitalized loved one, call me before the appointment. We can discuss the situation and whether a California-compliant option, such as credible witnesses, may be available.

📰 CALIFORNIA NOTARY NEWS | September 2026

Notary laws and recording technology are changing—and knowing the difference matters when you have an important document to sign.

🔹 Remote Online Notarization (RON)
California notaries cannot currently perform Remote Online Notarization. For acknowledgments and jurats, the signer must still physically appear before the California notary. The remaining RON provisions under SB 696 become operative when the Secretary of State certifies that the required technology project is complete, or by January 1, 2030, subject to the statute.

🔹 California Notary Fees — January 1, 2027
Under AB 1597, California's maximum statutory fee for common notarial acts such as acknowledgments and jurats increases from $15 to $20 beginning January 1, 2027. This is a maximum allowed fee—not a mandatory fee. Separately disclosed mobile/travel charges are different from the statutory notarial fee.

🔹 eRecording ≠ Electronic Notarization
Electronic recording means an eligible document is electronically delivered to a County Recorder for recording. It does not mean the notarization itself was performed remotely.
California counties may operate certified Electronic Recording Delivery Systems (ERDS), but submissions are handled through authorized submitters or agents and county-approved systems. Document eligibility and procedures can vary by county.

Most importantly, eRecording does not eliminate California's notarization or recording requirements. A document still has to satisfy the applicable legal and county requirements before the recorder can accept it.

🔹 Compliance Still Matters
Identification, personal appearance, journal entries, proper certificates, seals and recordkeeping remain essential parts of a compliant California notarization.

🤔Why should you care?
Technology may change how a document reaches the recorder—but it doesn't eliminate the rules that protect the integrity of the notarization.

Working with a knowledgeable, current California notary can help reduce avoidable mistakes, delays and document rejections.

MYTH 🚫: "Getting it notarized makes the document legal/valid."

TRUTH ✅: Notarization verifies IDENTITY and WILLINGNESS — it doesn't validate the content or make a bad document good.

That's why the document itself matters (see an attorney for drafting!), and the notarization protects it from fraud challenges. Both pieces matter.
