Aretha Franklin died in 2018 and left two wills written by her own hand. A jury just recently decided that the newer will, written in a spiral notebook and found under her couch cushions was controlling and should be followed. She was an amazing artist but perhaps did not receive or take the best advice when it came to her finances and estate. So far her estate has paid $900,000.00 in legal fees and probably over 99% of those fees could and should have been avoided. Before you write your own will, which is perfectly valid in California as long as it is entirely in your own handwriting, signed and dated, at the very least, call me.
Sorry for being long winded but I really would like to share the following thoughts from President Obama after she passed, I think they encapsulate Aretha's gift to this planet:
"America has no royalty. But we do have a chance to earn something more enduring. Born in Memphis and raised in Detroit, Aretha Franklin grew up performing gospel songs in her father's congregation. For more than six decades since, every time she sang, we were graced with a glimpse of the divine,' the Obamas wrote.
'Through her compassion and unmatched musicianship, Aretha helped define the American experience. In her voice, we could feel our history, all of it and in every shade - our power and our pain, our darkness and our light, our quest for redemption and our hard-won respect. She helped us feel more connected to each other, more hopeful, more human. And sometimes she helped us just forget about everything else and dance.'
