Some children don't fit neatly into "dependent" or "independent" categories making planning for their future especially complex.

In recognition of Special Needs Planning Month, it's an important reminder of the need for thoughtful, individualized planning for families navigating these situations.

Children who may be financially independent in some areas but still need long-term support in others, often require a more tailored estate planning approach.

Without clear planning, families may unintentionally leave gaps in protection or create unnecessary stress for loved ones later on.

A lesser-known SECURE Act exemption can help families with a child or grandchild who needs support but doesn't qualify for SSI or SSDI save significantly on taxes.

In 1988, Nancy Burner graduated in the top three percent of her class at Hofstra Law School, with interviews at prestigious New York City firms offering $92,000 salaries. Then, during the interview process, she learned she was pregnant with her third daughter.

The opportunity was extraordinary. The life attached was less appealing.

Burner chose a Riverhead firm paying $18,000 a year instead. The financial sacrifice was significant, but she could have dinner with her family. Seven years later, determined both professionally and personally, she launched her own practice in the basement of that same law firm, with free rent, a part-time secretary and no established client base.

“I was starting with very little other than the belief that I could build something of my own,” she recalls.
