Thanksgiving and the History of Black Friday

When people think of Thanksgiving, they think of turkey, football, and inevitably, Black Friday. However, the tradition of Black Friday has not always been associated with Thanksgiving. In the 1950s, there was no Black Friday as we know it today. There was no mad dash in front of your retailer where you had to wait in line at 4 am so that you could try to get a 30% discount. Instead, workers would often call in sick to their employer the day after Thanksgiving. Since Thanksgiving always falls on the 4th Thursday of November, the idea of Black Friday began to form.

However, Black Friday really didn’t take shape as we know it today until the 1980s, when people started to do their holiday shopping early the day after Thanksgiving. Since retailers often use the term “in the red” to mean that they are in debt and “in the black” to mean profitable, the term “Black Friday” actually came from the commercial retailers and store chains.

So as you stand with your fellow neighbors in line at Walmart like a pack of sardines,
remember this little historical gem, and maybe you can impart some of this new found wisdom on the people you are elbowing.

Happy Thanksgiving from Attorney Michael Sue!

Thanksgiving Day Trivia to Impress Your Friends and Family

Well, another Thanksgiving is creeping up on us and soon we will all be around the kitchen table gobbling down turkey and washing it down with mash potatoes and gravy. However, this year, in addition to talking about COVID vaccinations, football, and the new Tiger King, you can impress your friends and family with some fun Thanksgiving facts. While you’re asking your Mom to pass the dinner rolls, you could say, “Hey, did you know…?”

1) That the first Thanksgiving ever in the U.S. was in 1621 and was not just a one day celebration but actually a three day festival, and that many of the exact same foods we eat today on Thanksgiving haven’t changed since 1621.

2) That it was President Abraham Lincoln who actually made Thanksgiving into a national holiday in 1863.

3) That the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has been celebrated in New York City every year since 1924. Not even the COVID pandemic could keep the Parade down..

4) That the tradition of football on Thanksgiving Day stems all the way back to 1876 between Yale and Princeton University.

5) That on average, 704 million lbs of turkey are consumed every year by Americans..

6) That Thanksgiving is the biggest travel day of the year, beating out even Christmas.

7) Last but not least, that the day after Thanksgiving is the busiest day of the year for plumbers.

Michael Sue Esq. wishes you all a Happy Thanksgiving. Stay safe, happy travels, eat well, and hopefully these facts will put you at the head of the class at the Thanksgiving Day table.

Honoring Labor Day

Believe it or not, Labor Day has been around for over 100 years. The idea originated in New York in 1882 as a way for New York City to honor its unions by hosting a large parade in the city with at least 20,000 people in attendance. President Grover Cleveland officially made Labor Day into an official federal holiday in 1894, and both New York and America have been celebrating it ever since.

Like most holidays, Labor Day has evolved over the years. The early Labor Day celebrations involved grand-scale parades in the larger cities, with each union marching up and down its city streets. As the years progressed, however, the focus of celebrating Labor Day is now on engaging in activities, such as barbeques and get-togethers, rather than parades. What’s more, Labor Day is now closely associated with celebrating the American work ethic rather than just unions, and interestingly, is also known as being the official end of summer. This is why you hear the saying that you shouldn’t wear white after Labor Day. Traditionally, going back to the Victorian Age, wearing white was considered a summer color, and so with summer ending, the fashion trend was to no longer wear white. Nobody, of course, follows this anymore, but it’s always interesting to see how this came about.

Now that you’ve experienced the Labor Day of the past, Michael Sue Attorney-At-Law encourages you to experience and celebrate the Labor Day of the present this September 07, 2021.

REMEMBERING THE FALLEN

Memorial Day will be May 31. Borrowing from how the Southern States honored their dead soldiers, Memorial Day originated as a way for the Union to honor its troops who had died during the Civil War. Accordingly, Memorial Day was supposed to be a day when America remembered its fallen soldiers and in 1971 became a national holiday whereupon all public schools and public facilities were to be closed in remembrance. Over the years, however, Memorial Holiday, as with most federal holidays, have become more commercialized, where now Memorial Day is just as closely associated with backyard barbeques, hanging out with friends and family, and taking the day off from work as it is with remembering America’s soldiers who died on the battlefield.

So this May 31, when you find yourself enjoying the day off work and are playing with your kids in the Sun, watching Netflix on the couch, or enjoying the day outside with your friends and family, take a little time and remember the soldiers who came before and died. Remember the fallen.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS 2020

Although 2020 has definitely been one for the books, it’s Holiday season, which means getting in a more festive spirit and enjoying this time of year with friends and family. Of course, with the pandemic still looming about, this year will definitely look a lot different from years past. Not being able to see all of your relatives and loved ones in person takes its toll. Some people haven’t seen their extended family since March, since the beginning of the pandemic. People miss seeing their grandparents for fear of accidentally spreading COVID-19 and infecting the older relatives in their family. Parents with children feel bad that their own children can’t play with the cousins their age like they normally would this time of year.

Of course, there are others who may actually take the fact that they can’t see their extended family as a blessing since they won’t have to answer to their annoying Uncle Jack or have to constantly explain themselves to their demanding Aunt Jill.

“Why can’t you be more like your cousin Sheldon?” your mother would always scream as she pestered you during Christmas time. “He’s make six figures now.”

“Yea, okay Mom,” you would muter under your breath. “But at least I’m not an a**hole.”

SMACK!

“HEY!! What’d you hit me for MA?!!”

As stressful as the holidays can be, even before the pandemic, there is still no substitute for family. That being said, no matter how you celebrate the Holidays this December, even if you aren’t celebrating this year like you normally would, take some time out this year to call your relatives. Call your annoying Uncle Jack. Talk to your demanding Aunt Jill over the phone. And of course, make sure you call your mother. The holidays don’t have change that much. Some Holidays traditions never die.

Remember…..Everybody can always yell, holler, and belittle you over the phone or better yet, Zoom!. Isn’t technology great?

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FOR 2019

Well, the holidays is around the corner again, which means another round of watching Christmas Story back to back or being terrorized by the Polar Express. Sure, some people watch National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation or It’s a Wonderful Life, but I was never a person that watched conventional holiday movies. Personally, I grew up not always believing in Santa, so I watched, Rebel Without a Claus. When I was younger, I didn’t have much holiday spirit. My parents were concerned, so they took me to the hospital to nurse me back to elf.

Of course, the holidays usually means presents and lots of purchases. I used to think that Santa must have been a real rich guy in order to get presents for every kid in the world. But growing up I realized that he was actually probably a broke Santa and was actually Saint-Nickel-Less. In fact, Santa is so cheap that he actually paid nothing for his sleigh. It was on the house!

Money, or lack thereof, during the holidays also means lots of anxiety and in some cases depression. Some people turn to alcohol. In fact, I heard that that Grinch goes to the liquor store when he’s searching for some holiday spirit.

Growing up, I always thought that Santa’s elves beared the brunt of the holiday depression since they had so much pressure to build and deliver all of those toys for all of the boys and girls around the world. It was only as I got older that I realized that they actually suffered from low elf-esteem. One elf in particular, named Ornament, had a drug problem due to the fact that he had been hooked on trees his whole life.

Of course, in addition to money, the holidays can be depressing because it reminds people of past family trauma. Of course, we all know that Frosty asked the court to grant him his divorce because his wife hated the holidays and was a total flake. Frosty wanted to marry somebody who actually liked the holidays, so he married a mummy, who was into all the wrapping.

Then there are the holiday carols. There’s Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, Jingle Bells, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, and many others. Of course, everybody knows that any parent’s favorite holiday carol is always Silent Night.

Hopefully this little article put a smile on your face. Whether you celebrate Hunakkah, Christmas, Kwanza, Wicca, or whatever holiday you celebrate this year, Michael Sue Attorney-At-Law wishes you a very Happy Holidays for 2019.
