We all have things we’ve saved for someone.

Grandma’s dishes. Dad’s watch. A piece of jewelry. An old photograph. Something that may not mean much to anyone else but carries a lifetime of memories for you.

If you already know who you want to have something someday, consider whether someday needs to be years from now.

Sometimes giving a meaningful item during your lifetime means you get to tell the story behind it, explain why you chose that person — and see them enjoy it.

A good plan is about more than documents. It’s also about people.

As we get older, having trusted people around us can become increasingly important — family members, friends, healthcare providers, financial professionals and legal counsel who understand our wishes and can help us recognize when something doesn’t seem right.

That matters because isolation can make older adults more vulnerable to scams, financial exploitation and other forms of abuse.

Part of planning ahead is asking:
Who do I trust?
Who understands my wishes?
Who would notice if something changed?
And have I given the right people the appropriate legal authority to help when needed?
