Due to the extreme drought, the City of Durham will move to a Stage 2 Water Use Restriction starting next Monday, June 15.

Violations may result in enforcement actions:

💧 No spray or in-ground irrigation allowed at anytime
💧 Drip irrigation and hand watering are allowed only with a hose attachment that has an automatic shutoff
💧 No washing cars unless at a commercial car wash
💧 No washing hard surfaces such as sidewalks, driveways, decks, or building exteriors
💧 Pools: Add water only to replace evaporation or spillage and to keep chemical feeders running.
💧 Large water users (as defined in ordinance) are asked to reduce water use by 30%
💧 No new landscape-exemption licenses will be issued during Stage 2

The decision follows continued monitoring of the City’s 2 drinking water reservoirs — Lake Michie and Little River Reservoir — which have dropped because of limited rainfall, warm temperatures, and increased water demand.

The Durham Board of County Commissioners will meet in Regular Session on Monday, June 8 at 7 p.m. in the Commissioners’ Chambers (200 E. Main St.).

Following several weeks of budget work sessions and a public hearing, the Board will vote on the FY 2026–27 Budget Ordinance.

The public is invited to attend the session in person or watch live on the Durham County website, YouTube, or Durham Television Network (Spectrum 8/1302, AT&T U-verse 99).

Parents/Grandparents & Guardians, This week, NCDHHS announced the first round of SUN Bucks benefits for summer 2026 will reach more than 1 million children, with $121 million distributed to eligible families across the state. Please see below for more details⬇️

☀️ NC Parents Starting To Receive SUN Bucks Cards 📬 What You Should Know for 2026
🛒 Parents across NC are beginning to receive SUN Bucks cards, texts, emails, and mail notifications for Summer 2026 food benefits.
💳 The SUN Bucks program provides a one-time $120 grocery benefit per eligible child to help families buy food while school is out for summer break.
👨‍👩‍👧 Many children qualify automatically through programs such as free or reduced-price school meals, FNS, Work First, certain Medicaid programs, foster care, or other qualifying assistance programs.
📝 WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:
Eligible families will receive a NEW SUN Bucks card in the mail for Summer 2026. Benefits are not being added onto last year’s card.
📦 Cards are being mailed out in stages across NC throughout the summer, so some families may receive theirs sooner than others.
⏳ If your child normally qualifies and you have not received a card yet, officials say additional cards are still being mailed as the rollout continues statewide.
🏠 Families are encouraged to make sure their mailing address and contact information are updated with DSS or other assistance programs connected to their case.
