As Memorial Day approaches, our team at the Law Office of Jacob Goad pauses to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice is never forgotten, and we encourage our community to take a moment to reflect and remember.

As we get older, some of the details of all the ways our mothers contributed to our lives can be a little hard to remember. But the reality is that mothers are there with most of us through thick and thin. They get dirty for us — like Jacob's mom here, helping him paint his house after a breakup. Moms are there to wipe our butts and console us when life gets tough. We put them through hell "finding ourselves" globetrotting the world or living on the edge, and yet they love us and support us anyway. They bail us out of tight spots, like Jacob's mom once did for him in a big way when he forgot to mail a check. I think the reason we can't remember every detail is because moms are in it with us every step of the way — there's simply more than any one mind can hold. But we should try, because they are sweet, and they are forever.

We continue the theme of our staff honoring our mothers today with a tribute from Jacob's paralegal and sister, Mandy, to their mom: "Jacob and I are incredibly blessed to have a mother who has always put everyone else’s needs before her own. She loves unconditionally, gives generously, and supports fiercely. She may be beautiful and petite, but don’t let that fool you — she’s smart, strong, and would do absolutely anything for the people she loves. And while she is endlessly kind, if necessary, she can cut you off at the knees with nothing more than a smile and a wink.

She has always been, and continues to be, our biggest fan. She’s never too busy for a phone call or a meal — especially if Mark is cooking and she gets to happily handle the cleanup afterward. She never meddles, but when asked, she gives thoughtful advice and somehow always manages to gently steer you in the right direction.

One of my favorite things in the world is watching her eyes light up and hearing her giggle over her grandchildren. We are so lucky to have had such an incredible woman shape us into who we are and continue to guide us through life with love, wisdom, and unwavering support."

Ese es el plazo que tiene un trabajador en Carolina del Norte para avisarle a su empleador sobre una lesión laboral. No es el plazo para presentar el reclamo — es el primer paso, el del aviso. Y muchos trabajadores no saben que existe.
Los plazos clave a tener en cuenta:
▪️ 30 días para notificar al empleador sobre la lesión — preferiblemente por escrito
▪️ 2 años para presentar el reclamo formal ante la Comisión Industrial (generalmente con el Formulario 18)
Otros pasos que pueden ayudar a proteger su reclamo desde el inicio:
▪️ Buscar atención médica lo antes posible
▪️ Guardar registros de lo ocurrido y de su tratamiento
▪️ Confirmar que el proceso de compensación laboral se inicie correctamente

Alison Krauss & Union Station performed in Durham, North Carolina on Friday and Saturday nights, once again demonstrating not only their extraordinary musical and vocal virtuosity, but their deep connection to history and human experience. Among the highlights was a song recounting the Granite Mills fire, a tragic industrial disaster that claimed the lives of numerous workers, including children. The story echoes too closely to home. It brings to mind the Coal Glen mine explosion in Chatham County, a catastrophe that helped spur the adoption of North Carolina’s Workers’ Compensation Act, and is perhaps even more reminiscent of the Hamlet fire of the 1990s—widely regarded as the second-deadliest industrial disaster in our state’s history.
While I wish I could say that the lessons from these tragedies have been fully learned, that would be untrue. Unsafe working conditions still lead to preventable deaths across North Carolina every year. Too often, those losses stem from companies that prioritize profit over the value of human life. Compounding the problem, some of these businesses are foreign-owned operations that function with minimal oversight and lax enforcement of safety regulations. The music reminds us that these stories are not just history—they are warnings, and they remain painfully relevant today.

When companies cut corners and workers pay the price, our office steps in to hold them accountable.
