Technically in TN, a Notary Public can take an expired ID for identification as long as it was issued within 5 years by the federal or TN state government, includes a photo, signature & is not damaged (no holes).

Check out this original 1911 document signed by President William Howard Taft, officially appointing someone as a Notary Public for Washington, D.C. 🇺🇸
Back then, the President personally selected notaries for D.C., giving them a five-year term and the chance to serve at the President’s discretion. Unlike other notaries in the United States, D.C. notaries weren’t overseen by local officials-they were under federal authority!
💡 Fun Fact: In 1923, Vice President Calvin Coolidge was sworn in as President by his dad, John Calvin Coolidge Sr. who was a Vermont notary public. This was the only time a U.S. President has ever been sworn in by a notary.
