Today, Iron Range Law Cente honors those who gave their lives for our country. Since many of us at Iron Range Law Center are history buffs we felt important to discuss the origins of the holiday in thanking veterans. As you enjoy a day off of work, please be aware of your surroundings as to our freedoms.

Although many claim they were the first “Memorial Day”. In 1869, the head of an organization of Union veterans, Maj. Gen. John A. Logan from Illinois, established Decoration Day as a way for the nation to honor the graves of those who died in the Civil War with flowers, according to the U.S. Veterans Affairs Department. As a founder of the GAR veteran’s organization and issued a formal order. It reads as follows:

“The 30th day of May, 1868 is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance no form or ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.
We are organized, comrades, as our regulations tell us, for the purpose, among other things, "of preserving and strengthening those kind and fraternal feelings which have bound together the soldiers, sailors and marines who united to suppress the late rebellion." What can aid more to assure this result than by cherishing tenderly the memory of our heroic dead who made their breasts a barricade between our country and its foes? Their soldier lives were the reveille of freedom to a race in chains and their deaths the tattoo of rebellious tyranny in arms. We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. All that the consecrated wealth and taste of the nation can add to their adornment and security is but a fitting tribute to the memory of her slain defenders. Let no wanton foot tread rudely on such hallowed grounds. Let pleasant paths invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and fond mourners. Let no vandalism of avarice or neglect, no ravages of time, testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten, as a people, the cost of a free and undivided republic.
If other eyes grow dull and other hands slack, and other hearts cold in the solemn trust, ours shall keep it well as long as the light and warmth of life remains in us.
Let us, then, at the time appointed, gather around their sacred remains and garland the passionless mounds above them with choicest flowers of springtime; let us raise above them the dear old flag they saved from dishonor; let us in this solemn presence renew our pledges to aid and assist those whom they have left among us as sacred charges upon the nation's gratitude—the soldier's and sailor's widow and orphan.”

May all enjoy safety and freedom and continue to honor those who gave their ultimate sacrifice for us.

Today we recognize Cancer awareness day around the world. We are a firm that represents many types of individuals in many circumstances who have contracted cancer either through their work or others’ negligence. From chemicals being dumped into a neighborhood to those who are exposed to chemicals at their work on a regular basis, we hope that awareness of these environmental issues helps to make companies aware of the effect they have on human beings and their families. Be it mesothelioma or other cancers, exposure awareness has become exceedingly important. Iron Range miners show higher than expected rates of cardiovascular disease, lung cancer and a rare cancer known as mesothelioma. While there have been numerous advancements in the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer—factors that should contribute to the decline of the disease—including continued asbestos and other chemical exposure.
Numbers of new cancer cases diagnosed each year has globally continued to increase. There were 8.1 million new cases diagnosed in 1990, 10 million in 2000, 12.4 million in 2008, and 14.1 million in 2012. The number of annual deaths worldwide from cancer has also increased—from 5.2 million people in 1990 to 8.2 million people in 2012 to an estimated 9.6 million in 2018. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), if the incidence of cancer continues to grow at the reported rate, the number of deaths worldwide from cancer will increase to more than 16.3 million by 2040. However, also according to WHO, as many as 40 percent of deaths from cancer are preventable. The environmental factor is something all can be aware of and work towards We haveprevention. Raising awareness of cancer prevention has become a prominent goal of many cancer and health organizations around the world, and World Cancer Day has come to represent an annual reaffirmation of the importance of this goal. Today Schmidt and Salita recognizes world cancer day and hopes that we all can do our part in eliminating carcinogens. We hope you all stay healthy. any questions please call us at 800-656-8450 or 952-473-4530.
