As graduation season comes to an end, here’s something many parents don’t realize…
The day your child turns 18, you no longer automatically have the legal right to make decisions for them, even if they still live at home, are on your insurance, or you’re the one helping handle their everyday life.
Without a Powers of Attorney (Durable and Financial), parents likely will not be able to:
• Speak to doctors or access medical information;
• Help with banking or financial matters;
• Handle school or legal paperwork;
• Make emergency decisions if their child is injured or unable to speak for themselves;
• Assist with important day-to-day matters that suddenly become “private” once they’re legally an adult.
Nobody likes to think about emergencies happening, and let’s face it: Life Happens. Having these documents in place can be both convenient and can also save families from unnecessary stress, delays, and even heartache in already difficult situations.
