First, Ty wanted to share with other lawyers the lessons and best practices he's learned over the years. Newer in-house lawyers will benefit the most from this content, but seasoned general counsels may also pick up a trick or two. Second, he wanted to provide basic legal tips and guidance for non-attorneys. With experience working for start-ups, small and medium sized businesses, as well as large publicly traded companies, Ty understands that no matter the size of the company, employees are often asked to answer legal questions, sometimes without the help of a lawyer, and in-house lawyers are often asked to answer legal questions on subject matters they have no direct experience with. Whether it’s reviewing a contract, trying to improve a compliance program, or negotiating the next big deal, business professionals and in-house lawyers alike often do not have the legal support they need. A few weeks ago I had the honor of meeting Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm and other DOE Leaders when they visited our new battery plant being constructed in Toledo, OH. We were fortunate to have been selected for a DOE-MESC grant for automotive companies converting from ICE to electric vehicle manufacturing. I truly mean fortunate, as we were 1 of 10s (probably 100s) of applicants for this grant, being 1 of only 8 companies awarded the grant.

This day was particularly rewarding (and exhausting) for me, as I was the lead author of the ~80+ page grant application, I wrote the speeches for my company’s speakers, and was the project manager coordinating Secretary Granholm’s and DOE’s visit. Other distinguished guests included Congreswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH’s 9th District), City of Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz, and several UAW leaders.

Truly a unique professional experience… Most of us in-house lawyers don’t get out much 🙂

For global companies, ESTA and VWP can make business travel to the US quick and easy. However, there are certain requirements companies and ESTA-travelers need to understand, because failing to abide by those rules can result with the traveler being rejected at customs, and sent back to his or her country of origin.

Both the company and employee-ESTA travelers need to understand ESTA and VWP rules and requirements before attempting to enter the US under ESTA.

Had a wonderful going-away lunch with a good friend and colleague. Many international companies have expatriate programs, where employees live abroad and work. After 4 years of service here in Metro Detroit, he’s moving back to Seoul, South Korea.
