23 years ago today, on Christmas Eve, we brought Livie home from the hospital. She was beautiful. 23 years later, she has graduated to oddly stunning. We can’t get through a family outing without boys embarrassing themselves with their awkward advances. But to call her “beautiful” is hardly a compliment. She did nothing to earn it. Sure, she brushes her hair. But apart from that, her beauty is just a gift, like any other.
Well, now my pretty 23 year old is on the news 5 nights per week. She’s really good at it. Her spirit makes the news brighter. As he continues to monitor her from afar, the head of her former university broadcasting department regularly emails me about what a stand out talent is Liv, preparing me for how far she’ll go. Unparalleled among her predecessors in her broadcasting school, he says. A talent like he hasn’t seen before and doesn’t expect to see again. She is, indeed, uniquely talented. And while she works incredibly hard to perfect her craft and prepare her stories, her talent is just another gift.
But what makes Liv truly rare, is neither the gift of her unusual beauty nor the gift of her unusual talent, but rather that she understands that these blessings are gifts and she remains grateful to the giver. She loves God with all of her heart, all of her soul, and all of her strength. And He loves her back, with both hands wide open. That’s one of the things I love most about Liv, not her gifts, but her gratitude to the giver.
And we are likewise grateful to Him, for giving us you. So as we wind down the celebration of your birthday, and wind up the celebration of His, I thank God for the gift of you, Livie. I love you unconditionally, always and over the top. Happy Birthday, Love.
