Are you seeking inspiration to challenge yourself by cycling the iconic Lookout Mountain in Golden, Colorado? Here are some photos of what you can expect to see on the 7-mile ride up to the 7,389-foot summit of the climb at Boettcher Mansion and Lookout Mountain Nature Center. The average grade is about 5%, and you’ll gain approximately 1,800 feet from Ford Street in downtown Golden. If you don’t want to go all the way to the top, you can stop at Windy Saddle Park about halfway or just below the summit at Buffalo Bill’s Grave and Museum.
As you ascend, you’ll have breathtaking views of downtown Golden, Coors Brewery, Denver, Clear Creek, and Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park. You’ll be exposed for most of the climb until you reach the pine trees near Windy Saddle Park. You may encounter deer, blooming wildflowers, cacti, and various bird species. Keep in mind that vehicle traffic can be heavy on the weekends, as Lookout Mountain is more than a popular cycling destination. You’ll often see hikers, rock climbers, paragliders, longboarders/speedboarders, and many tourists out enjoying Lookout Mountain. Lookout Mountain is part of the historic and scenic byway known as the Lariat Loop. Be cautious, as the road shoulder can drop off in some places. Always ride with a group in single file, use front and rear lights, and be sure to ride on the right side of the road especially when descending, as vehicles and motorcycles are known to make dangerous passes of slower cyclists.
Toward the top, you can stop for coffee and pastries at Et Voila French Bakery or there are water fountains and bathrooms available during the open season at Lookout Mountain Nature Center and Preserve. After refueling, you can enjoy the ride back down Lookout Mountain or continue exploring further into the foothills.
