I have been very fortunate the past 3.5 years since opening my law firm to represent clients from large businesses to small businesses to individuals in high-stakes litigation. I am grateful that I can also help those who cannot afford legal services and need a lawyer the most. This recognition is as important as any success my firm has achieved. I hope we all can find a way to help give back no matter what you do.

One year ago I took the biggest risk of my life to leave a career I loved and co-workers I adored to start my own law firm. I’m grateful that it has been worth the risk, and it’s a lesson in believing in and betting on yourself.

While I was passionate about helping victims of financial fraud as a prosecutor, I am equally passionate about helping individuals and businesses as a private lawyer, whether as a civil litigator or defending government investigations. It’s a tremendous honor to represent people whose businesses and livelihoods depend on your advocacy, and fighting every day for my clients is an amazing feeling—one I completely underestimated when I made the leap.

I recently received the following message from a client who faced a significant risk to his business from a government investigation: “Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!!!!!! My wife and my employees thank you!!” Helping people like this is proof to me that I’m doing what I wanted, the way I wanted.

I appreciate all your referrals, support, and trust in me during this past year. It’s not always easy taking the big risks and I’m fortunate to have many friends, colleagues, and supporters who’ve made it easier.

“Integrity is choosing courage over comfort.” Brene Brown

After more than 9 years as a prosecutor of financial and business fraud at the Colorado Attorney General, I’ve embarked on a new challenge by opening my own law firm. To be sure, it is a leap of faith and I’m equally scared and excited. Getting a real job would have been easier and safer. But I always wanted to impart at least two lessons to my son: (1) fighting for those who cannot fight for themselves and (2) pursuing your dreams—no matter how challenging either can be.

I hope I accomplished the first by confronting and taking down powerful businesses at the Attorney General and leading a dedicated team that recovered the most victim restitution in the history of the office. The best memory I have was a random encounter with a fraud victim at an event unrelated to work. She saw my name, asked if I was from the Attorney General, and started to cry and said that we fought for her, recovered her money, and nobody fights for people like her. Damn it felt good to help people like her and hold accountable the powerful who took advantage of those who couldn’t fight back. It reminded me that I made the right decision to walk away from a lucrative partnership offer at a law firm, join the Attorney General, and fight for people like her. I got in the arena with the powerful, stumbled, came up short at times, but always fought—and it was worth it.

Now is the time for me to pursue the next challenge. I don’t want to look back with regrets so I made the leap of faith by leaving a meaningful and comfortable job I loved. I don’t know if I’ll succeed but I won’t regret trying. I also want to continue to fight for people because it’s what I’m about. I hope my son will learn from these lessons and I’ll know that I did not compromise my life for comfort and security but lived on my terms and put myself out there. I’m choosing courage over comfort. Erik
