After fifteen years together, one of my relationships unexpectedly ended this week. 😔
When I grabbed it to pick up for a presentation this week, I realized the zipper on my trusty backpack had broken. And now, I'm feeling an unexpected mix of emotions.
This backpack has been more than just a bag - it's been a silent witness to some of the most challenging and rewarding years of my life. It carried the weight of my law school textbooks, each one representing countless hours of study, stress, and stretching out of my comfort zone. Every crease in its fabric tells a story of late nights in the library, frantic note-taking in that one professor’s class who didn’t allow computers but talked a million miles an hour, and the sweet relief of finishing an exam.
As I transitioned from student to lawyer, my faithful backpack came along for the ride. It accompanied me to countless meetings as I built my practice from the ground up. It held contracts, case files, and my ambition as I ventured out into the community, meeting clients and building a network.
Now, I'm faced with the reality that it's time to say goodbye to my trust backpack. To be honest, I wasn't ready for this chapter to close. It feels like losing a friend who's been with me through thick and thin. Each scuff and stain is a memory, a reminder of the path I've walked to get where I am today.
But as I reflect on this unexpected loss, I'm reminded that life is full of these small endings. They catch us off guard, make us pause, and force us to confront change. It's in these moments that we have a choice: to cling to the past or to embrace the opportunity for something new.
So, as bummed as I am to say goodbye, I'm choosing to see this as a chance for growth. The memories won't be lost - they're etched into my journey, just as surely as they were woven into the fabric of my old companion. Instead, I'll use them as fuel to propel me forward into the next phase of my career.
To my backpack: thank you for your service, your reliability, and for being a constant in a world of change. You've earned your retirement. And to whatever comes next: I hope you're ready for an adventure. We've got some big shoes (or should I say, straps) to fill.
