Happy Not Columbus Day. Did you notice last year Gov. Polis abolished Columbus Day in Colorado? Now the state celebrates Frances Xavier Cabrini Day on the first Monday of October, recognizing her work with immigrants, orphans, and other marginalized people. So, what is today? It's Indigenous Peoples Day, a day that has been recognized by the City of Denver since 2015! 48 contemporary Native American tribes call Colorado home, and Mariposa rests on Arapaho, Cheyenne, Ute, and Oceti Sakowin land. Borders, occupations, governments, and societies change, but the land has always been and was first stewarded by Indigenous people. Recognizing and respecting the impact Indigenous people had, have, and will continue to have is important. Deep roots help us grow strong, and keep us stable even in the winds of change.
