Supreme Court nominee, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson just said, "As a lawyer and citizen, I care deeply about our Constitution and about the rights that make us free. As you say, criminal defense lawyers perform a service. Our system is exemplary throughout the world precisely because we ensure that people who are accused of crimes are treated fairly." Today is a good day!

Ms. Colvin's picture hangs in one of our offices as a reminder that the progress we make now is because of the progress others have made before and that others will stand on our shoulders as we work to bend that moral arc towards justice and know. Mariposa is celebrating along with Ms. Colvin; she's no longer a "juvenile delinquent" but remains an inspiration!

Colvin refused to give up her bus seat for a White woman months before Rosa Parks' act of defiance.

Are you ready!? Tomorrow is National Cookie Day!!! Cookie Monster, ahead of his time, referenced it in the 1980 The Sesame Street Dictionary, though National Cookie Day was officially created in 1987. At Mariposa we are using our usual recipe but taking our cookie game to the next level by trying brown butter. Not sure if these cookies will last until tomorrow, but we don't think Cookie Monster would mind us celebrating a day early! You've got a day to prepare, what will you be baking?

Well, check it out - our little street got a stop light on Broadway. Not something I would generally be excited about, but it means it will be easier (and safer!) for you to come visit us on 5th Avenue. See you soon!

I have thought that the courthouses should allow us attorneys a “transition period” where we are permitted to wear our sweatpants to court and bring our pets who have been making such welcome appearances in virtual courtrooms.

Since no judge has made such an offer (yet), as we get back into the swing of getting dressed and driving to court, don’t forget:

- your files
- deodorant (because, well, we’ve got to be around people again),
- a pair of flats (high heels are overrated),
- a Tide pen (driving and drinking coffee... we're out of practice)
- your favorite mask,

… and it’s probably a good idea to leave the pup at home. What's the one thing you never leave without?

Happy Not Columbus Day. Did you notice last year Gov. Polis abolished Columbus Day in Colorado? Now the state celebrates Frances Xavier Cabrini Day on the first Monday of October, recognizing her work with immigrants, orphans, and other marginalized people. So, what is today? It's Indigenous Peoples Day, a day that has been recognized by the City of Denver since 2015! 48 contemporary Native American tribes call Colorado home, and Mariposa rests on Arapaho, Cheyenne, Ute, and Oceti Sakowin land. Borders, occupations, governments, and societies change, but the land has always been and was first stewarded by Indigenous people. Recognizing and respecting the impact Indigenous people had, have, and will continue to have is important. Deep roots help us grow strong, and keep us stable even in the winds of change. Learn more about the land you are on, increase your understanding of our shared history, and grow your roots deep within the land. If you want to learn more about the land you are on, check out the app Native Land. And, if you want to understand the value of acknowledging Indigenous land, check out: https://usdac.us/nativeland. Happy Indigenous Peoples Day! How are you going to celebrate!?
