Decision-making rights are one of the most misunderstood parts of family law.
In Colorado, joint decision-making means both parents are expected to discuss and participate in major decisions involving their child’s life. That includes medical care, therapy, dental treatment, and educational decisions like school placement, tutoring, IEPs, or specialized programs.
Religious upbringing can also be part of parenting decisions. Parents have the constitutional right to expose their child to their own faith and beliefs. However, courts do not support one parent attempting to undermine or negatively influence a child against the other parent’s religion.
At the center of every allocation of parental responsibilities case is one focus: the child’s best interests and long-term well-being.
Understanding your rights and responsibilities matters. Clear communication and informed decision-making can make a significant difference for your family moving forward.
