Today we lost a pioneering icon in the fight for equality and justice. Gloria Steinem's life and work transformed American society and law in ways young people may not fathom, creating changes we take for granted in the last half century. From her championing the Equal Right Amendment, to changing the laws that denied women credit and bank accounts in their own names, to her continued fight for reproductive rights, Gloria was a tireless advocate for justice and rights for all. She not only challenged societal norms in her lifetime, but her legacy will empower coming generations to think critically about the structures of gender, control and privilege. Rest in Power.

Last week we took a break from lawyering and had a team outing to ACTIVATE AURORA - where we spent a few hours playing games and building our team at the interactive technology center! If you have a few hours and want to play we recommend it highly! And then we went for tacos.

63 years ago today, Dr. Martin Luther King delivered his famous "I have a Dream" speech at the March on Washington. We still celebrate the dream. Dr. King's words endure with clarity and conviction to the plight of Black Americans and all that is sacred in American political culture, from the founding to the present day. “We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped of their selfhood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating ‘for whites only’. We will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream." We honor the legacy of Dr. King and all fighters for justice.

The ongoing defense of Ukrainian independence and autonomy highlights the profound truth: freedom and justice require constant vigilance and universal solidarity. We owe deep gratitude to the defenders of Ukraine all over the world and remain committed to a future of just, lasting peace.

235 years ago on August 23rd in Saint Domingue (now Haiti), the uprising that played a crucial role in abolishing the transatlantic slave trade began. This International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition is intended to memorialize the tragedy of enslaved peoples brought from Africa and the Caribbean to America. It is a moment for collective responsibility of the causes, methods and consequences of this abomination of human trafficking and impact it had on the origin story of many Americans who lost their original heritage.

Today we celebrate International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, recognized by the United Nations. Indigenous Peoples make up less than 6% of the global population, but they represent 15% of the extremely poor in territories encompassing 28% of the globe. Inhabiting 11% of the world’s forests, they are guardians of the world’s remaining biodiversity.

We're thrilled to introduce a new member of the Zalessky Law team! Abbie Swanson comes to ZLG as a Summer Extern and is a third-year law student at the University of Denver. She is passionate about estate planning and enjoys helping individuals and families preserve their legacies through thoughtful, practical preparation. Abbie is a Colorado native who grew up on the Western Slope. Outside of law school, Abbie enjoys playing mahjong, mountain biking, and spending time with her cat and dog.
