Social media suit: Plaintiff’s lawyer Mark Lanier insisted during the opening day of trial against Meta Platforms Inc. and Google’s YouTube that they created a "digital casino" that "engineered addiction in children’s brains."

Meta attorney Paul Schmidt of Covington & Burling spent most of his opening focused on the plaintiff’s troubles at home, primarily verbal and physical abuse.

Lanier used three wooden blocks, a miniature slot machine and an egg to help illustrate his opening.
