It was such an amazing experience sponsoring these young women. I had the opportunity to speak with some of these girls during the run. Their love for the sport that taught me so much overwhelmed me with joy. For me, running has always been my safe space. It allowed me the freedom from my racing thoughts and brought me peace and clarity. Running taught me that ‘tired’ is a state of mind. It taught me that I can always push longer and harder. And that if I worked hard, no goal was out of reach. I hope these young ladies continue to find happiness in the sport that taught me so many important life lessons.

My girls ran it too. Many of them have already experienced the devastation of breast cancer. Watching them wake up at dark thirty, put pink ribbons in their hair, ribbon tattoos on their faces and tow the line filled my heart with pride.

As for me personally, it was bitter sweet. This should have never been in Jacey’s memory. Jacey should have been there, running beside me, not just in spirit. She was too young to be taken from all of us who loved her. She was my rock and I miss her every damn day.

Thank you to Stacey Zabinsky Mullins Garbowit for organizing this event. Her hard work was evident and so very much appreciated. I am looking forward to being apart of this again next year!

And a special thanks to Tina Fuqua Barnes who joined us in this special run. Next year Savannah Kerstetter and Jacey’s granddaughter will join us (I promise I’ll push the stroller!). Sefton Kingsbury Barnes II had to evacuate due to the storm, but he too will be there next year!

Cancer sucks.

Changes to the Alimony Law in Florida: July 2023 Update

In July 2023, Florida enacted significant changes to its alimony laws, aiming to modernize and streamline the system to reflect contemporary family dynamics. One of the most notable changes is the elimination of permanent alimony, a move that shifts the focus towards more temporary support mechanisms. This change is intended to encourage financial independence post-divorce, rather than long-term dependency. The new law introduces a presumptive cap on the duration of alimony, which is generally half the length of the marriage, but may be longer. Additionally, the reform emphasizes the importance of considering the financial contributions of both spouses during the marriage, including non-monetary contributions like child-rearing and homemaking. This holistic approach aims to ensure a fairer distribution of support based on each party's role and efforts within the marriage. Another key aspect of the 2023 changes is the provision for modification or termination of alimony in response to significant changes in circumstances, such as retirement or substantial income changes. This flexibility is designed to address the evolving financial situations of both parties over time. Furthermore, the reform sets clearer guidelines on calculating alimony amounts, taking into account factors like the duration of the marriage, and each spouse's financial resources and needs. These changes aim to create a more predictable and equitable alimony system, reducing the likelihood of prolonged litigation and fostering amicable settlements. Overall, the July 2023 updates to Florida’s alimony laws represent a significant shift towards promoting self-sufficiency and fairness in divorce proceedings, reflecting the state’s commitment to adapting its legal framework to better serve its residents' needs.

Why is hiring a divorce attorney with a mental health background important? Divorce can be a traumatic and emotionally draining experience for couples and families. It can have a negative impact on the mental health of all those involved, including adults and children. When parents go through a divorce, they often find themselves dealing with intense feelings of sadness, anger, guilt, and stress. These emotions can cause them to feel overwhelmed, anxious, and depressed. Children, too, can feel the effects of their parents’ divorce. They may struggle with feelings of rejection and abandonment, as well as sadness and anger. They may also worry about their future and how the divorce will affect them. The mental health of children can be further affected if they are exposed to conflict between the parents during and after the divorce. Research has shown that children who witness their parents involved in conflict are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. It is important for parents to remain civil and supportive of each other during and after their divorce, as this can help their children cope with the situation in a healthy way. Choosing a divorce attorney with a background in mental health can help alleviate some of the inherent conflict experienced during the divorce process and assist the family rebuild their lives on a solid foundation.
