Our 5-year-old client was sexually assaulted at school by another student, a student who had sexually assaulted another child at the same school just a few years earlier.

Making matters even more egregious, "While (the 5-year-old victim's) family pleaded for action, the School Board did nothing to remove (the perpetrator) from campus despite the known threat he posed to (the victim) and other students."

A lawsuit claims a Pathways Elementary student with a history of sexual assault was sent to the bathroom with a 5-year-old, who he also assaulted.

“In many cases…adults were able to have one-on-one interactions with students, while the children at the school had limited communication with their families and were vulnerable due to age, sexual identity and lack of experience. And, it says, some were scared to report what happened to them.”

The isolation and vulnerability of students can make boarding schools particularly ripe environments for sexual predators. Parents must remain vigilant and ensure that schools foster a culture that actively reduces opportunities for isolation, protects vulnerable students, and creates safe, accessible ways for students to report concerns and abuse.

In a new report, former Interlochen students detail some 70 allegations of sexual abuse by nearly 50 adults employed or affiliated with the school. One of the former students tells his story to NPR.

“It’s just my word against theirs.”

We hear that from survivors all the time. But many people underestimate what can serve as evidence.

Texts. Emails. DMs. Photos. Calendar entries. An old journal. Changes in behavior others witnessed. Pieces of the story often exist in places you might not expect.

Before you delete anything, talk with someone who understands how these cases are investigated. The evidence you think doesn’t exist may be closer than you realize.

My experience after 30 years is that an institution’s first instinct after an abuse disclosure tells you everything. Protect the survivor or protect the brand. Open the doors to the truth, or lawyer up to bury it.

Too many choose the institution over the victim. BozLaw exists because of that choice.

“Has your abuser told you to delete messages, photos, or any other documentation of their actions? They may claim erasing these things will protect you. Do not believe them. The only reason someone urges you to destroy evidence is to protect themselves.”

All too often, abuse survivors tend to look through “rose-colored glasses” and overlook red flags when a Christian institution expresses interest in conducting an “independent investigation.”

“You have, understandably, a trust in this institution, because you think because they’re Christian, that they’re going to do the right thing,” Tchividjian said. “And you need to at least take a step back and think about the possibility that maybe they’re not doing the right thing. Maybe they’re more concerned about themselves than you. And maybe they’re utilizing this trust and this hope that you have in the institution to protect themselves and to discourage you from taking further action.”
