Make sure your family is aware of your wishes, and know how to access benefits and assets when they need them most.

Make sure to check on your retirement accounts regularly to make sure they’re properly set up and maintained. This is especially true after major life events. If you change jobs, make sure you understand whether or how your current retirement account rolls into a new one. Make sure the right beneficiaries are designated. You may also be able to make certain choices about how your account grows, making you better prepared as life progresses. As with everything, the more you know about and understand your financial position, the better.

What happens if anything happens to you that makes you unable to make your own decisions? What happens if - God forbid - an accident or illness robs you of your mental capacity? Who will make decisions for you? If you don’t have a plan in place, your family will have to go to court and file a petition before they can properly take care of you. Don’t let that happen to you and your family.

If anything happens to you, your family will be left to pick up the pieces. They’ll need to plan a funeral and figure out how to continue their lives without you. Don’t make their lives more difficult by not having a plan that includes an accurate and up to date list of your assets. Otherwise, they may not have immediate access to everything they need, or may even lose assets to the state department of unclaimed property.
