Celebrating the Investiture of the Honorable Hunter B. Morrill
On Friday, October 2, members of the Smith Bigman Brock family had the distinct privilege of attending the judicial investiture of the Honorable Hunter B. Morrill, celebrating her appointment by Governor Ron DeSantis to serve as a Judge of the Volusia County Court.
For our firm, this was much more than a professional milestone. It was a deeply personal and very proud moment.
Before taking the bench, Judge Morrill was a valued member of our litigation team, bringing to her practice the same intelligence, dedication, integrity and commitment to service that will now guide her work on the judiciary. Earlier in her career, she served as an Assistant State Attorney in Florida’s Seventh Judicial Circuit, and her commitment to the legal profession and our community has been evident throughout her career.
But for many of us, Friday held an additional significance. Hunter is the daughter of Horace Smith Jr., one of our firm’s founding partners, and many of those gathered to celebrate her have quite literally watched her grow up. To have known Hunter through the years, to later have the privilege of practicing alongside her as a colleague, and now to see her take the oath of office as Judge Morrill was extraordinarily meaningful.
Smith Bigman Brock has a long tradition of attorneys associated with our firm going on to serve Florida’s judiciary. We are grateful to have played even a small part in supporting those who have chosen to answer the call to public service, and we are especially proud to see Hunter continue that tradition.
One of the most touching moments of Friday’s ceremony came from Judge Morrill’s 4 year old son, Brooks, who proudly stood before those assembled and led the Pledge of Allegiance while holding his mother’s hand. For so many in attendance who have watched Hunter grow up, there was something especially poignant about witnessing that moment with the next generation. It was a beautiful reminder of the family, community and sense of service surrounding this very special occasion.
Judge Morrill, it was our privilege to call you our colleague and our friend, and it is with tremendous pride that we now congratulate you on this well-earned honor.
May you serve with wisdom, fairness and compassion as you begin this important new chapter of public service.
Congratulations, Judge Hunter B. Morrill. We could not be prouder.
