Campaign for Equal Justice

Campaign for Equal Justice A joint campaign of ABLE, LAWO, and the Greater Dayton Volunteer Lawyers Project in the Miami Valley region. (ABLE), Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Inc.

Civil legal aid is an essential part of America’s promise of equal justice for all. The Campaign for Equal Justice is your opportunity to invest in making this promise a reality for thousands of individuals and families living in the Miami Valley region. Your support of this campaign can make a life-changing difference for those in our community who cannot afford a private attorney, or who cannot

navigate the justice system on their own. Lack of access to the justice system is a defining aspect of poverty and a barrier to breaking the cycle that traps many families. Like many other legal services providers and pro bono programs across the country, we are meeting a small fraction of the legal needs of low-income people. Bridging this justice gap is critical to the success of the work of Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (LAWO), and the Greater Dayton Volunteer Lawyers Project and is the primary reason for the campaign. This year’s campaign goal is $200,000, and we’re relying on your financial and legal support to make it happen. Through direct donations to the campaign, or a commitment of your time through pro bono casework and clinics, you can make a difference in our beloved Dayton community. Watch this page for updates on the campaign, as well as fundraising and event opportunities such as Justice on Tap! and the annual Access to Justice Awards Celebration!

We had an amazing evening at the 2023 Access to Justice Awards Celebration, honoring distinguished awardees and raising funds for the critical legal services of ABLE, LAWO, and the Greater Dayton Volunteer Lawyers Project - VLP.

Many thanks to the Dayton legal community members and supporters who joined us to celebrate the contributions of Ericka Curran and Laura Bucio.

Additional thanks to our Emcee for the evening, Luke Dennis from WYSO Public Radio; to our Access to Justice Awards Celebration Co-Chairs Glen McMurry and Andrew Vollmar; to Dean Andrew Strauss from the University of Dayton School of Law for presenting the awards; and to our generous sponsors, committee members, board members, and staff who helped make this event such a success.

We were pleased to once again host the Access to Justice Celebration at Sinclair Community College, and to have the University of Dayton Jazz Ensemble provide music for the festivities.

Please enjoy a few photos and highlights from the celebration!

Please help us recognize the crucial legal assistance Ericka Curran has provided to Dayton's immigrant and refugee communities at the 2023 Access to Justice Awards Celebration on Thursday, November 2. Ericka is the 2023 Lloyd O’Hara Public Interest Law Award recipient.

As a professor at the University of Dayton School of Law (UDSL), Ericka teaches Legal Writing, Immigration Law, Interviewing, and Counseling, and supervises the Immigration Law Clinic. During the pandemic, Ericka connected with Catherine Bitwayiki of Cross Over Community Development (COCD). She began helping refugees who were unable to get assistance due to the shutdown of many vital programs. Ericka continued to assist clients of COCD and take legal requests from other community organizations with the support of law student volunteers. Ericka is also the faculty advisor to UDSL's Immigrant Law Student group.

We look forward to celebrating the impact that Laura Bucio has made on our community at the 2023 Access to Justice Awards Celebration on Thursday, November 2. Laura is this year's Patricia Rousseau Community Advocacy Award recipient.

Laura is currently the TESOL coordinator for Tecumseh Local Schools, where she provides direct services at the middle and high schools while overseeing the district’s elementary schools with the help of four paraprofessionals. As a former English learner herself, she developed a passion for this population early in her educational career. She is known for going above and beyond for her ESL students and recently realized her high school summer program students needed a more challenging and comprehensive experience. As a result, she promoted the development of the Latino Center Summer Program at Wright State University, a six-day program that explores success strategies needed for a positive first-year college experience through the lens of Latino culture.
