As part of your preparations for Hurricane Irma, don't forget to do these 4 important things:

1. Print a copy of your homeowner insurance policy and keep it in a safe place. Check your insurance carrier's website, you may be able to download a copy directly to your smartphone.

2. Get familiar with what your policy covers. For example, you may have coverage for living expenses, including hotel stays and meals, and debris removal.

3. Take pictures and video of the interior and exterior of your home before and after it is secured, including all of your valuables, like furniture, electronics, etc.

4. Keep receipts and records of repairs after the storm. If your home is uninhabitable and you incur expenses for hotels and meals, keep those receipts as well.

Taking these 4 simple steps will help you with your insurance claim in the event your home and contents are damaged during Hurricane Irma. Insurance companies may undervalue or deny your claim. You should not accept any settlement offer without speaking to a lawyer.
