Government Shutdown Hurts ID Theft Victims, Too
The government shutdown is negatively impacting identity theft victims. Because of the shutdown, identity theft victims cannot submit identity theft reports to the Federal Trade Commission.
So what's the big deal? The Fair Credit Reporting Act ("FCRA") provides identity theft victims with important rights. For example, when an identity theft victim provides a credit bureau with an identity theft report, the credit bureau must block the disputed account from appearing on the consumer's report within 4 business days. Victims used to be able to obtain the identity theft reports from the Federal Trade Commission - but cannot now because of the shutdown.
If you are a victim of identity theft, there is now one less protection in place. An important reporting resource, almost five weeks into the government shutdown, cannot be accessed.
