Justice Emily Miskel serves on the Fifth District Court of Appeals in Dallas. She previously served as presiding judge of the 470th District Court in Collin County, where she handled complex, high-asset family law matters and disputes involving closely-held businesses, substantial estates, and intricate financial structures. A graduate of Harvard Law School and Stanford University, she is double b

oard certified in Family Law and Child Welfare Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Before entering law, she worked as a mechanical engineer in the oil and gas industry, an experience that informs her disciplined, systems-oriented approach to financial and technical evidence. Rehnquist Award for Judicial Excellence from the National Center for State Courts in 2020. She serves on the Texas Judicial Council and the Texas Supreme Court Advisory Committee and has written and spoken nationally on issues involving electronic evidence, digital privacy, and evolving technology in complex legal proceedings.

Governor Greg Abbott has named William “Bill” Gravell, Jr. and Emily Miskel to the Indigent Defense Commission Governing Board as ex-officio members. The Commission provides financial and technical support to counties to develop and maintain quality and cost-effective indigent defense systems.
